Just don't make the jerk chicken too spicy for the masses.

The pasts is OK vegetarian, but not vegan if you care about that.

Is this a sit down and be served type meal and you're choosing your
entree? I'd take the chicken's way out and choose the vegetarian
pasta. Not much to go wrong with that one.

The subject line said it's a buffet.

It reads like a sit down meal. Doesn't make sense as a buffet - there
has to be more to it. No appetizers, no vegetables, no white rice for
the pork. They must know the eating preferences of their guests. I
know I hate attending wedding receptions, even those of my own
children.

They can eat fruit, but there probably aren't any vegans because she'd know
already. Vegans like to advertise.

Well... we don't really know where the the OP found the alleged menu do
we? Is this from an actual or upcoming event? <shrug> I merely
answered your question based on the subject line. I honestly don't know
what this menu is supposed to be.

Sounds good enough to me. You went there and it was free food. What's
to complain about or critique? I hope they did have a nip of wedding
cake though...it's a traditional thing.

I would switch either the jerk chicken or the sweet and sour pork for
something else. Both are very unique flavors and don't quite go
together. Remember, at a buffet, people are going to load their plates
with a little of everything.

My extended family was divided between Catholic, and Protestant/Agnostic.
If the wedding was Protestant, I had no interest in going, because I knew
that there wouldn't even be a bunch of beer for the grown-ups, and
certainly not for the kids, but the Catholic wedding receptions rocked.
There was plenty of beer, and 12, 13, 14 year-olds were allowed to drink
it. *Plus* there was one thing even better than beer, the possibility that
there might be the opportunity for slow dancing with girls.

Beer and female bodies, and there was food too. That was my trifecta then,
and 40 years hasn't changed that one bit. You are right though, some of
the food at receptions can be crappy.

Dammit - I didn't 'go there' or complain. I don't even KNOW the girl. You read too much into things.
A bride was merely asking for opinions of her menu in another forum.

I don't want to come across like a picky eater. I really don't
have any trouble finding food I like at any given buffet dinner.
I'd have to go with a nice salad and a fruit, and rolls and butter
here. Wouldn't complain ... but it's amazing that this menu is
comprised of two main dishes I can't stand. Sweet and sour, blech.
Can't stand jerk chicken. Add in a curry and it's the nancy
trifecta. Though now that I look closer, if the beans and rice
are separate, that's fine, too. I wouldn't starve.

Sounds like a fairly inexpensive way to feed a crowd. Also, has choices
for just about every kind of diet. I like it.

What's vegetarian pasta, isn't pasta vegetarian by default... last I
checked wheat is a vegetable... but then the ricotta cancels out the
vegetarian part.

>>> Jerk chicken over beans and rice

Unless you're feeding Jamicans very few people in the US like jerk
seasoning... I know I find it disgusting.

Sweet and sour could be okay but what cut of pork and how cooked?

>>> fruit tree

What, pick your own?

>>> caesar salad

Could be okay for some but a lot of folks don't like caesar dressing

>>> rolls and butter

I know, the notorious Kaiser rolls! LOL

Very true... and most folks won't like either. Chicken would
typically be roasted with no odd seasonings. I don't think I've ever
seen a pork entree served at a wedding... that's something reserved
for the groom to serve.

I'm not a picky eater either but there's not much there to pick
from... I'd be happy with a cold cut platter to pick from but looks
like I'll have to settle for a ricotta and spinach sandwich on a
Kaiser roll... what's to drink... if it's gonna be one of those
fercocktah no alcohol affairs I'm leaving right after I take a leak
for the drive home, and no gift.

Saucy meat.... no vegetables?

That would work for me but a lot of people do not appreciate fruit, or
just fruit. They want something sugary sweet.

Vegetarians again. Caesar salad has eggs and anchovie in it.

Sounds good to me but also sounds like the sort of thing a lot of people
would not appreciate.

My health food nazi sister in law is like that about health foods and
organics. She sounds like a broken record. I have been exposed to her
for about 40 years it still accounts for close to 50% what comes out of
her mouth. The other 50% is her strange politics.

I always think that the wedding couple should decide what kind of food that
they like. However, I would add to that some sort of appetizers, even if
only a cheese plate and raw veggies.

I did wonder about the pork and also wondered exactly what a fruit tree
might be.

For many people, the highlight of the wedding food is the appetizers. There
can be a long wait from the time of the ceremony and the time of the dinner.
They don't even have to be expensive things. Some nuts (assuming there are
no nut allergies) or chips and salsa are better than nothing.

I hate wedding receptions too. Especially the ones that go on for hours and
hours and hours and have some hokey band or DJ that thinks they are playing
the music that we like.

If that's the kind of food that she likes, then great! But I would still

I would think a lot of people wouldn't like jerk chicken. I've never tried
it. Doesn't sound appealing. I technically could eat sweet and sour but
it's by far not a favorite food. Although if the bride and groom like these
things or they know the family or friends or whatever like it then I guess
it would be fine.

Upon further reflection, I'd probably have the chicken. I don't care
for jerk, but who knows, maybe I'd change my mind.

I've only been to a couple of no-booze weddings. I don't think
they're very common in a lot of areas.

I think the wedding couple should consider who they've invited. The
wedding is about the couple, of course. The reception is the
after-party and the focus should include the guests. I agree about
adding some appetizers. Spanakopita triangles comes to mind. If
serving raw veggies some sort of dip is in order.

They're not. Maiym Bialik is a vegan and she's quite nice. She also says
it is not up to her to tell others what to eat. Ellen is also a vegan and
although she appears nice, magazines have said otherwise.

You can't just blatantly condemn any one group of people like that. I ate a
vegan diet for a while and it didn't change my personality any.

And vegans and vegetarians are not the same thing.

Beeswax isn't vegan!

Maybe they are doing the catering.

I'm not the only one here who said that about jerk seasoning. I have eaten
with people who were eating it. They didn't like it and it didn't smell
good to me.

And I am most assuredly not dicatating that at all. I said that I thought
the wedding couple should serve what they like. Heck, everyone knows if I
were to have had a big wedding with food, there would be Mexican fare. Of
course I would make sure that everyone I invited would get something that
they liked to eat though. So if I were to invite someone who didn't like
Mexican fare, I would have something else as well.

My suggestion was to add appetizers. I could hardly be faulted for that.
Pretty standard at a wedding reception. No?

No sw, I don't. I just blab on and on. But what I don't do is pick on
people like you are doing to me now!

Most of the weddings I've been to were no booze. I was raised Methodist and
they don't drink. Or they're not supposed to anyway...

I'm curious. Are these all her favorite "restaurant foods" or what?
Caterers have menus to choose from and that doesn't sound like any
menu a caterer would supply.

sw mentioned the name of some Christian caterer in that area that has those
things on the menu.

I have looked up catering menus in this area when bored. Although some were
extensive and had options that even I would choose, I also saw quite a few
that were limited and not all that good. Heck, places like Qdoba and Taco
Del Mar do catering. Not that I'd want it. Yes, I know that I said that if
I were to do a wedding reception we'd eat Mexican but... I do have some
standards.

First I've heard of that. My mom was raised Methodist and there was
definitely no prohibition against alcohol. I've got a pic of Grandma
holding a beer at Mom & Dad's (decidedly casual) wedding reception.
