I can now watch a cpl seasons worth of this TV program. Not as bad as
I once thought. Lotta claptrap, but occssionally some good ideas. I watched the ep which includes both shepards pie and DIY corned beef. Good tips I'm gonna give a try. Also watched the Herbed Pan Fried Steak ep. The "semi demi glaze" recipe was particularly interesting. Ol' Pompous Bow-Tie Man is still a lingering annoyance, but easily ignored, now that I understand his agenda. ![]() nb |

I didn't see their recipe (I'm signed up for the freebie looks, so I guess it's not a show from a current season), but I like Julia Child's - I bet it's another good use for the slow cooker, with the lid off. Mushrooms and tomato would make it even yummier. Semi-Demi-Glace Makes: 1 cup 2 quarts homemade beef stock 2 tablespoons red wine (optional) Directions: 1. In a large saucepan, bring stock to a boil. 2. Turn heat down to the lowest heat setting and allow to simmer for several hours until stock has reduced to 1-2 cups (remove any scum that rises to the surface as it simmers). 3. It has reduced to demi-glace if it thoroughly coats the back of the spoon. > > Ol' Pompous Bow-Tie Man is still a lingering annoyance, but easily > ignored, now that I understand his agenda. ![]() > What do you think his agenda is? I see Bow Tie Man playing the same role on ATK that Jacques Pepin's daughter played when she was on JP's show. They are rather harmless and the voice of those who don't have much kitchen experience. I don't find that annoying, but apparently some who claim to have experience in a professional kitchen do. -- Good Food. Good Friends. Good Memories. |

The only free recipes they give you are from the current season and you know it's from a past season when that happens. When it does, move on and find a food blogger who has tried the recipe - you can usually find one that's verbatim and if it's not, they tell you what they did differently. I just can't remember now what it was that I was looking up. It happened to me the other day when nb was talking about their recipe for semi demi-glace. I was able to see enough of the preamble to the recipe to know I wasn't going to try their version because it calls for gelatin. I looked up other recipes and decided I preferred Julia Child's and the variations I saw on that one, which call for a real reduction (which means time) to thicken it - not gelatin. -- Good Food. I once spent undogly amts of $$ on repairing a high-end VCR, twice! Never again. Neither repair lasted over 6 mos and they'll all go down the same road. My mom has 2 VCRs and 3 cassette dubbing decks. All dead. Toss 'em and move on. nb |

Open the VCR and look for a loose or broken belt. You might be able to reuse the existing belt by cleaning it to remove any glazing. I'd use MEK for that. If you need to replace it, finding the correct one could be a problem. Mostly, I used to use one that looked about the right size. Other than that, servicing the VCR would be cleaning the heads and greasing the moving metal parts. There's probably a ton of info on how to service a VCR online. Good luck. |

WD40 came to the rescue last week with my Cuisinart's "detachable disc stem". It was almost completely frozen and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to release the disc. Luckily my son was in the house, so he used brute force - I got out the WD40 and sprayed what few moving parts it has and now it works like it's brand new. Saved myself time and money replacing the darned thing. -- All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt. |

As I said, my vcr just froze up from not being used for a year or 2. That should tell you how important a recorder is to me. Very few shows would I actually record these days. Exception being the hour and a half (9:30 -11:00) on Saturday mornings when Cook's County and Test Kitchen is being aired here. I never watch or want to watch tv at that time but I do love the shows.
