The ones I got were fresh printed and I folded them from scratch! That took
some practice I can tell you.

Idiot. Maintaining the same speed on grades saves the most fuel, and
is safest... do you really want your vehicle to coast downhill... in
fact cruise control is designed so that if you apply your brakes it
cuts out.

Yeah, I really don't need a GPS to tell me to take Route 80
for 500 miles. I'm good. At some point I need directions to
get to the exact place I'm going. If I don't have a local map,
I sure need directions.

This reminded me of a funny thing. We were driving since 5am
on the way to Michigan. Hours go by, finally it's my turn to
drive, so we pull over at a rest stop. He goes to sleep and
I'm on the road. Suddenly I see a sign, Jersey Shore however
many miles. (*&(*& How did I manage to get turned around????
He's going to be mad when he wakes up.

Just a little Pennsylvania prank, naming a town Jersey Shore.

It wouldn't save your life, because the other drivers holding steady
speeds would kill you. 8

And it probably wouldn't save any gas. As it is, you use extra gas
holding speed uphill, and save gas running easily downhill. I've never
seen an actual analysis of relative consumption, though.

I've never even bothered with cruise control in my last few cars,
so I thought that the hill problem was just with my Peugeot.
Are they all like that? You're cruise control, you're supposed
to maintain the speed!

Why would you want to slow down going up a hill? That could actually be
dangerous. Every car I've ever had would speed up going down as they
don't put the brakes on. The new adaptive may be different though.

Got me. I just know it's nowhere near the Jersey Shore.

Okay, I see it's on a river, and Jersey Shore was a nickname
until it was formally adopted.

I was just relieved I hadn't inadvertently added two hours to
an already long drive.

My Garmin is very handy for finding my way through big city streets...
I can find my way all over NYC without GPS, from growing up there and
riding my bike everywhere, but I'd get lost around Albany NY without
my Garmin. NYC has very recognizable landmarks everywhere, I don't
recognize any around here, one wooded hill looks the same as another.
And I've discovered that about 10% of the time the Garmin is incorrect
at finding a particular address, a few times it directed me to the
opposite side of the road. Garmin asks that you report errors so they
can make corrections. GPS is amazing technology, however I still
saved all my paper maps, I find them invaluable as a visual reference
for distance and directional relationships over large areas.

I never felt much of a need for a GPS in my car but I got one for my
wife because she is geographically challenged. I have used it a few
times just to compare which routes it will send me on compared to which
one I would normally take.

I have to say that I found it very handy one day when we went to my
great nephew's christening in the north end of Toronto. When we left the
church I punched in our nephew's address, which was a little tricky due
to a number of one way streets that have been rude surprises in the
past. I was pleased at how quickly it got us there. The only problem i
had was when we were travelling along Hwy 401 and it kept telling me to
go to the express lane and then the collector lanes, back and forth.

We had something interesting happen in the way in. I had it set for the
main intersection close to the church and it gave an ETA of 11:55. We
had left home and were making good time. The speed limit was 100 kph
and I was doing about 115. About half way there it suddenly recalculated
and changed the ETA to 11:59. That made no sense to me because I was
going 15 kph over and I figured that it should have given an earlier
time to reflect the higher speed. Son of a gun. When we got to that
destination intersection I looked at the clock and it was 11:59.

With cruise control you can accelerate with the gas pedal and as soon
as you take your foot off it will automatically return to the preset
speed, but if you hit the brake that cancels the cruise control so you
will begin to slow to a stop unless you press the "Resume Speed"
button. There's no reason for a "save gas" button on hilly roads,
maintaining a constant speed saves the most fuel... and it would be
terribly unsafe coasting down hill. On hilly roads the ups and downs
average out.

Yes, you can. It works very well. In fact, my daughter no longer uses
the GPS built into her car, as she prefers the one on her phone.

This I know, but if I have to step on the gas to maintain my
speed on a hill, where's the control in cruise control.

As I said, it's good for a long trip with little traffic,
otherwise I find it useless. Why I haven't even touched it
on my last 3 or more cars. It's just there.

Some 25 years ago, I had built up a large collection of classical
cassettes (not copies but those made by the record companies). After
divorcing, I used my first tax refund to buy a new amp, cd player and
the Nakamichi so that I could play those tapes. I have hardly used it as
I have bought numerous cds and they are much less hassle. I went to the
trouble of burning cds of some of the cassettes only to see them
commercially re-issued on cd shortly afterwards.

On topic? Like all your medical history, every single relative's
medical history, the relative of a former coworker's hearsay medical
history, your online shopping conquests, your bra size, your cats, your
pet psychics, your neighborhood terrorizing cat stealing raccoons, your
cars, your water heater, your roof, your daughter, your daughter's
disabilities, her dance classes, her crappy school that forbade you from
contacting them, your husband, his demands, his inability to figure out
how to open tupperware, the tv shows you watch, the ones you don't and
wouldn't like because so-and-so told you they weren't good, your mailbox
keys, your pest problems, your contradictory having to carry a GPS
because a relative said the ones built into an iPhone are bad, yet you
claim afterward to not know that an iphone can give you turn-by-turn
audible directions, etc.

Furthermore, the last I checked this group was supposed to be
"rec.food.*cooking*, not rec.food.complaints.

No, your're not stepping on the gas to maintain your speed,
only to *accelerate* past your set speed.
With cruise control your car should maintain the set speed on a hill,
both up and down... if not something is wrong with it.

>As I said, it's good for a long trip with little traffic,

I used to occasionally use cruise control on Interstates but that was
more than ten years ago, I haven't used the cruise control on my car
since I'm living here. However I use cruise control on my tractor all
the time when mowing, by holding a constant speed I get a more even
cut and gives my leg a rest on long runs... also saves some on diesel,
because the thing is on turf, even on a downgrade one is always going
uphill because the tires are always climbing out of their ruts, and
the wetter the soil the deeper the ruts.

No, the car would slow on a hill. IT should be accelerating
for me. Being cruise control.

That's what we were talking about.

Now, I wouldn't have thought about there being cruise control
on a tractor, that seems useful.

Yep. And good luck trying to explain to her that's she's the only
person on this group doing that, along with the endless contradictions
are illogical outcomes. And she pretends to wonder why many of us take
her to task.

Not that far fetched either :/

Younger people (and I include those in their 30's) are generally
'educated' (if you want to call it that), but seriously lacking in
practical skills and applying plain common sense, and the ability to
think for themselves.

Which has nothing to do with the Chinese (or their suits) that dsi1

If it is not keeping up on the hills, you need a car with more power.
Never had that problem with my cars, but I tend to go with more power in
a full sized car. Get the turbo next time.

You know full well exactly what jinx is talking about.

And yet you won't spend a few dollars to have a locksmith change the

So you converted the raccoon to motor oil? Don't let the oil companies

Be careful. They've been hired by the raccoons to check if you have
replaced your abducted cat yet.

No need to LOOK at it - just LISTEN to it. That's already been
explained to you. But then, that would solve the problem, wouldn't it?

My car didn't have any problem going up hills, but when the
cruise was on, it didn't react quickly enough with more power
to an incline.

I drive 6 cylinder cars these days. Good enough for me.

So... you listen to the directions from the passenger who is
looking/interpreting the GPS for you - but NOT from the GPS itself,
which needs no such thing and will do that for you.

And this also works for you presumably when you have no passengers.
Or maybe it doesnt, and your GPS is of no use to you at all, because
you won't listen to the directions or look at the map.
Understood.

I don't want it on the phone. The phone is small. The GPS is large.
