There is a feel to > your posts that remind me of Buffy Lyre or whatever her name was eons ago. --- Not many but a few. And that was an execption. I only did it because I was stuck home after stepping on that nail and all of the infections and operation and such that went with it. Because I was unable to go out and get any food, I was paying a pretty penny to have food delivered. I was also unable to get up and get my own food so was dependant on what was brought to me. Nobody in this house was eating their normal foods. It was a very bad and stressful time. Nobody complained about the food during this time. We just ate what we had or got and we were glad that at least we had food. --- Hang in there - she, lacking in originality, will surely post another variation on this theme in the near future. --- Nope. You, like others here take one thing that I say and assume that every day in our house is the same. They're not. Things change. For the worse or for the better. But they always change. It's summer now so our meals will change. Daughter's dance schedule has changed. And I presume it will change again when school starts. Much of what I make for meals depends on her schedule. |

It does say why. It's not their normal diet. They could fill up on that because it is convenient to them but then not get the nutrients they need. Country Village (an old timey shopping area here) has a lot of ducks and they sell feed just for them. But people still give them bread. Also at the Olive Garden in Lynnwood, there are two ducks. They've gotten so used to the garlic breadsticks, they won't eat anything else. What really bugs me is the drive through animal park in Seqium. They used to sell you up to two loaves of stale bread at the entrance if you wanted it. This was to feed to the animals. They had an odd assortment, including a zebra. As the years went by, the place went into serious decline. They had less and less animals and the animals did not look healthy at all. They no longer sell the bread but they will still allow you to feed it to almost all of the animals. |

But that in and of itself is the problem. If they are in your backyard and you begin feeding them bread, they'll just keep coming there to get that and not forage any more. Which is why it says if you are going to feed them, to feed them the proper food. |

I doubt that they wouldn't forage for other stuff, but I'll go along with it's not a good *idea* rather then real harm unless you fed them 10 loaves a day as opposed to a crust here and there. Birds will eat bread, too, but again it's not part of their normal diet unless you make it so. Sure, it fills them up. But depending on the type of bird, seeds or worms/grubs/bugs are what they eat. Deer around here will decimate many outdoor potted plants right down to the stem. They're herbivores. Jill |

On top of that, it has caused some deadly situation in the water that kills the ducks. A bacterial problem of some sort. Sorry I don't remember the details. I wonder if the same is true for popcorn. I have done that, fed popcorn to the ducks in the Public Gardens in Boston. nancy |

I had a blue jay that took peanuts from my hand and would sit at the patio table waiting for them. He lived a long time. I have a pic of him sitting next to a long neck Budweiser, but he wasnt' a drinker.:-) Cheri |

Deer eat quite a varied diet, and their diet changes with the seasons with what's available. |

Mostly what you see at public gardens are geese, not ducks. Geese are easily domesticated, not so with ducks. |

We don't often see geese here although at some point (Spring?) we can hear them flying over our house. Daughter tried to take a pic of it but it was at the wrong angle for her to get it. |
