Has anyone ever had it go bonkers before? I was trying to send a food gift
when all of a sudden I got some sort of warning message saying that the
website was trying to redirect me. This is not the first time this has
happened. Happened to me perhaps a month ago. I finally then gave up and
went to bed. Was fine in the morning. But now? It is sending me to some
Mexican Costco site. I gave up this time and ordered from Amazon. It cost
me a little more, is not quite the same thing but at least it will get there
quicker. Somebody's birthday slipped my mind. So I needed to send
something right away.

Never use it.

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.

I used to use it a lot at Christmas but they don't change the stock on the
gift baskets enough so to mix things up a bit I sent most things from
Walmart this past year. I did send a food gift last night or the night
before to someone recovering from a back operation. Things worked fine
then. I keep checking and it's still the Mexico website. Just weird.

what did they say when you reported this to the Webmaster or your local
store?

In reality, she probably didn't think to look for a "location" link.
You don't have to speak Spanish to figure out which flag your country is
associated with.

Actually I did. The first time this happened, I had no clue what the mx
meant. It wasn't taking me to any meaningful screen. But something...my
AV? Not sure... Something stopped me from doing anything on that screen
but closing it. Told me that I thought I was going to costco.com but it was
trying to take me to costco.com.mx. Had I clicked through, which it warned
me not to do, I likely would have going to that site.

The second time, I closed the browser and typing in costco.com, or typing
"Costco" into the search engine, only brought me to the Mexican site. The
URL showing did not have the .mx on it at all.

If you had clicked on the FLAG icon at the top of the web page and
selected USA you'd have been redirected to the USA. Then we wouldn't
have had all this broken website drama.

I don't drive all over the place shopping for stuff. I consolidate my
trips so I don't have to shop all the time. I don't have nearly the
stores you talk about - Publix, Food Lion, a couple of dollar stores.
That's about it. You make it sound like you're always hopping from one
store to the next.

Sorry, but popcorn is empty calories. It's not nutritous. That's no
kind of "diet" for someone who is recuperating from surgery.

You really do tell the most incredibly long-winded stories.

Don't complain you can't afford to replace a light socket with something
workable in your bedroom. If you weren't buying a bunch of stuff like
this you might be able to have a switch installed.

Sorry, but you really do put yourself out there.

Uh, no. Have you ever hired an electrician or a handyman? Here they cost
$250 just to get through the door. With Mr. Handyman, that allows you 2
hours of work plus parts. Calling him for just something like that would be
stupid. Don't you think? I did hire him to put on the new storm door. We
needed that right away as the old one became so totally broken that the wind
was ripping it around. And the screen had fallen totally out of it. He had
fixed it prior. Wasn't his fault that the fix didn't hold. The whole thing
was jury rigged to begin with. Before that I hired him to do all sorts of
work at once. When I do have him back, it will be to do many things.

I can complain about any damned thing that I want, just like you can. So I
order food online? It's either food that I can't find around here...and I'm
not going to spend hours driving around looking for shelf stable food! Or I
am sending gifts and it is far cheaper for me to go that route than to ship
it myself. Most of what Costco sells comes with free shipping! At least
for the foods and you do get a lot of food for that price. Their gift
baskets are unbelievable values. Remember, they are a wholesaler!

Also when I was stuck on the couch and could not get out, I had no choice
but to order online. But now? If I am ordering from...say...Walmart or
Drugstore, it is because the prices are cheaper. When my husband wanted
Slimfast, Walmart had a good special going on. Assorted drinks and foods
(you chose what you wanted) for a price that was about half what I would pay
in a brick and mortar store. The price was only good online. And free
shipping!

Recently Drugstore offered a free shopping tote with "green" items in it if
you spent a certain dollar amount on "green" items. I looked to see what
they counted as "green". I started with Biobags as I needed the larger
ones. Yes, I can buy those in the store around the corner but I will only
buy on sale as they are expensive. Drugstore beat their sale price! Yes,
Costco sells the tiny ones. I needed the bigger ones. And guess what
counted as green? Jerky. That was on my grocery list. The bacon jerky in
particular. Sooo... I bought something I was already going to buy. I paid
less than what I would pay at the brick and mortar store. *And* I got free
stuff to boot! Most of what I got was cosmetics. There were some vitamins,
OTC meds, eye drops and food. Tons of free stuff. And we have either used
or will use most of it. So why not?

Oh and don't want to read my long winded stories? Don't read them. You
keep forcing me into a position to where I feel the need to defend what I am
doing to you. I shouldn't have to do that. But if I don't? You'll keep
taking potshots at me. There's nothing at all wrong with buying food online
or sending food gifts. Maybe you are just upset because you're not getting
any? Food gifts that is. I don't know. I have no clue why what I do in my
house is so upsetting to you. But clearly it is.

Is there anything at all she can say that doesn't deserve a put down?

I don't think it is. Swagbucks is not spyware.

It is most definitely spyware. Because they reward you for letting them
gather information on you doesn't make it any less a form of malware.

That speaks volumes for you then. This reminds me of a friend that I
used to have. He would say things like, "OMG! Just look!" Then he would
point his head towards someone. I wouldn't see anything blatantly wrong but
he would act like it should have been obvious to everyone. And then he
would say something like, "Well, his pants!" And again act like it should
be obvious.

You idiot, you don't even know what spyware is. Swagbucks IS spyware -
you give them access to your personal information in exchange for the
opportunity to collect "freebies" - which aren't free, you're paying
for them by giving up your privacy.

But that's not the problem, because you voluntarily chose to do that.
The problem is, Swagbucks toolbar can and often is a delivery device
for a variety of malicious software. They admit it themselves. IT
techs know it, too. As do the malware detection and removal companies,
whose software is designed to flag this as a Potentially Unwanted
Product. The toolbar is made by Conduit, and anybody who knows
computers will tell you they don't allow Conduit products on their pcs
because they are malware delivery devices.

But you will insist it's safe, it's reputable - hey, you're earning
SwagBucks! even while your computer slows down because it is becoming
ever more infested with malware delivered by that toolbar. Malware
that redirects you to different websites, malware that changes your
DNS settings, malware that can do anything, including collecting your
personal information and sending it to unknown third parties. Because
you don't know shit about computers.

Who knows - maybe some day you'll earn more in SwagBucks than you pay
out to have your computer repaired!

Conduit! That name was all over the malware I got last spring
that really messed up my computer and my MP3 player when I plugged
it in to charge. PUP.Conduit, something like that.

Took Kaspersky, Norton and Malwarebytes to finally root it out.
I'm just working up the nerve to plug in my backup drive after
all this time.

Uh-huh. Like I said, anyone who knows pcs knows to avoid anything
associated with Conduit. It's akin to giving a sixteen year old boy
you barely know the keys to your house while you're out of town for
the week. Of *course* he'll invite all his friends to come party at
your house, and *of course* a whole bunch of disreputable strangers
will show up as well. End result: trashed house. That's what you get
for giving strangers access to your property.

He liked to put others down just for the sake of putting them down. The
other person usually hadn't even done anything wrong but he still found some
reason to do it. You went on about my not being able to afford a light
socket when a light socket wasn't even the problem! You just like to attack
me!

Please give me a site for this. I did look this up last night using both
Google and Bing. The only things I found where people were saying this were
blogs or places where they want you to buy their software to remove stuff
from your computer.

My brother is a programmer and he knows that I use it. He did not tell me
not to use it.

I didn't insist any of this stuff. I just haven't seen anything that is
clear cut proof to me that it is bad. And you are correct, I don't know
much about computers.

I do not believe in any way, shape or form that the redirect came from them.
I believe that it came from Costco. I did write to them. I have not heard
anything back.

My DNS settings are not changed. I did see on several websites that made
the claim that it will hijack your browser to them. It has not done that to
me and in fact, I have had to put it on there myself.

Show me some proof of your claims.

All I did was click on a website that was going to advise me
on the bloom time for Shasta Daisies. Blammo.

Depends on what tool bars and extensions are added by malware. Conduit stuff is always trouble.

Install Malwarebytes, run it and see what malware it finds. Your computer is very likely loaded with crap. All your private information is free for grabs when you use Conduit type malware.

Husband picked up a bad one when he was researching new cars. I think
someone here mentioned a long time ago that malware can be installed
by the rotating ads that pay for the websites we visit. The site is
innocent of installing the malware and it's next to impossible for
them to police the situation.

I have Malwarebytes! I do run it. It's fine.

Yes. Such an ad was placed on the website for American Idol some years ago.
There was also one on Hot Coupon World.

Yeah, I'd like to think Well, I won't do that again! but I didn't
do anything wrong. Now that I have all these security programs
on the job, I hope one of them saves me before something like that
ruins my week again.

I never click links like that on purpose. I have accidently clicked a few.
If something does look interesting, I will type the link in myself. I
learned my lesson many years ago. Saw a banner ad for Mexican Grocer.
Realized that I hadn't been there in a while so thought I would check and
see what they were selling. It was a phishing site. No damage was done as
I hadn't entered any info. I knew right away from the URL that it took me
to that something was wrong. Pages looked the same and everything.

I tried looking on Bing and Google. I saw no definitive proof. Just sites
that want you to pay to remove stuff from your computer and also a blog.
Everything else says that it is safe and not malware. You're the one making
the claim. You and a few others. No proof.

I run Kaspersky. Do I need Malwarebytes? Would they conflict?

You should have both. Malwarebytes specifically checks for Malware. Not
everything it finds is Malware though. It will give you a list if you find
anything and you decide what to do.

They won't conflict...only run Malwarebytes every two weeks or so...at least that is what I do. Follow the instructions.
