I live in Southern California and ate them as a kid.

Southern California is a different world. It's filled with people
from the "other" South and Texas. Strangely, I don't associate AZ and
NM with SoCal - probably because they aren't as loud.

Restaurants around here still serve Frito Pies, but they stopped serving
them in the bag of Fritos, they now serve them in bowls. Not nearly as
much fun. I will make it every 4-5 months. Comfort food.

Veering slightly off-topic here...

DH and I ended up in Bozeman Montana on the 4th. The fireworks were at
the Gallatin County Fairground, which was about 3 blocks from our
hotel. We watched from the hotel parking lot, and a very nice local
couple who were also watching from there offered us a beer and a lawn
chair and some lovely company.

I have to say I've never been more impressed with fireworks in my
entire life. I've never seen anything like it.

You Americans really know how to celebrate your national birthday!

That sounds like a fun time, and nice people. I haven't seen fireworks
in several years, mostly because I can't stand the ones that don't have
much of a show and are all noise, like a cannon or something. I hate
those. But from some videos I've seen lately, firework shows have really
come a long way. But for some reason they seem shorter than I remember.
I heard that the fireworks on the Washington mall were going to last 17
minutes. Is that it?

I love going to the pyrotechnic show in Lake Havasu City AZ. It's a
whole weekend of spectacular pyrotechnic dislays. Too late for this
year, but there's always next year.

I think I actually prefer to look at the videos. You can turn the sound
down and you don't have to breathe in all of the smoke and gunpowder. Plus
no fear of accidentally getting hit with a spark.

Our fireworks watching is a small deal. We all walk down to the neighborhood park where our city puts on a small but impressive show.

It is a loud affair, because the fireworks set off the alarms of the cars parked around the park. Those plus the fireworks themselves set off the neighborhood dogs.

It ends up being one raucous event, lol.

Watching a video of fireworks would, I suspect, be much the same as
watching someone's vacation videos rather than going on vacation in
person.
