Any plans, traditions, must-haves?
We always make homemade ice cream for the Fourth of July. The French vanilla recipe on the box of rock salt is a good, basic recipe that exactly fits my ice cream maker. We usually grill, so I'm guessing we will do hamburgers, hot dogs, cheddar wurst, beer can chicken, corn on the cob. I've read good things about Goya Mojo Criollo marinade, so I picked up a bottle to try. We like lots of leftovers to pick at for the next few days. Watermelon is a must. Last year we stuffed little sweet peppers with mozzarella, wrapped them in bacon, and grilled them. Tara |

Will serve canned beans and potato salad from Costco. Will also make coleslaw. Will buy hotdogs and buns in case husband wants them. We don't grill. And we only eat outside if the temps. force us out there. Hard to say this year. Record high slated for tomorrow. We'll see how the 4th is. |

Swimming, bbqing, and walking down to the local fireworks display is all part of our tradition. Today we had a high of 104 (I live 30 min. and 30 degrees outside of SF ![]() ![]() ![]() We always have burgers and hot dogs, potato salad, macaroni salad, green salad, quinoa salad, salads all made by me, corn on the cob picked that morning from our local farm stand. Also, lots and lots of watermelon. Dessert will be cookies, novelly ice cream like Drumsticks, Eskimo Pies, Ice cream sandwiches. This year we have a new gas grill and we have test-runned it a few times, but not on so many items, hope it works out ok. Hope everybody out there has a fabulous 4th! Nellie |

Yesterday was pleasant shirtsleeve weather, but it's so foggy and cool today that spit pea soup seemed like an appropriate lunch. 59F/15C, Humidity 89% and Wind 14 MPH -- All you need is love. I'm not a big fan of peppers, but I bought some to cook in different ways to try to like them. I grilled some just plain the other day, and they were good enough. I'd like to try your method. -- ღ.¸¸.œ«*¨`*œ¶ Cheryl |

We used to call it Seven Layer Dip until someone said it was a WT. Refried beans, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, scallions, sour cream, olives, not necessarily in that order. The point is to dig down with your chip to get a bit of each layer. I used to make it on one very large platter, now I make two medium sized ones. Nellie |

By the time we eat, play around, get ready to walk down to the fireworks, we barely have time nor interest in dessert. We learned long ago that it was a waste to fuss with all those cute flag cakes and other fancy sweets. You'd be surprised how much the adults exclaim over the ice cream Drumsticks Lol, Stuff from our youth, ya know. We used to have 50 to 75 people for the fourth when my husband's grandmother was alive. She was born on July 4th, 1900. Now we don't do anything or go anywhere. It looks like the hurricane will be near here Friday so lots of things are already cancelled. Boston has upped their Fourth celebration to the third.

But that's the first I've ever heard of that. Ever since I was a kid, a walking taco meant exactly what I said that it was. She acted like that was a new thing. |

I have some egg mustard I'm going eat after mowing the lawn. By the way, why is it called 4th of July and not Independence Day? Why not call July 4th "Independence day" and have it on the first Monday of July, or such? Calling it July 4th is kind of dumb. Who started that and why does it continue? We don't call xmas "December 25th" and say "Happy December 25th!" Maybe we should-- then nobody could really complain. Could satisfy all religious and non religious people. And July 4th should actually be July 2nd. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...-4th-is-wrong/ |

Gee. Tough question. Maybe because it is to commemorate the day that the American colonies declared independence, thought it actually two days after the Continental Congress passed the resolution. In Canada we celebrate Canada Day on July 1st. Since the queen is officially the (figurative) head of state, we celebrate a sort of royal birthday, but it is in honour of Queen Victoria. When I was a kid, the holiday was called Victoria Day, but royalists are a dying breed and more recently it has come to be known as May 24...... May 2-4. Thanks to our northern climate, it is thought of as the beginning of the warm weather. It is not warm enough to go swimming, but it is warm enough to sit outside and drink cold beer. Beer is most commonly sold in cases of 24, usually called a 2-4. Hence, the holiday has become May 2-4 because people for out and buy 2-4 s of beer. + |

For our final, we had to get a partner and make something. My partner angered me by wanting to make Toll House cookies. I figured they were common and anyone could have made them but I eventually agreed because we had time constraints. We were able to make the dough one day, chill it then bake the next. We got an A. Two guys in the class made the Frito pie. The kids were all impressed by it and thought they should have gotten an A for inventiveness. Since it is an uncommon food here that was the first we'd heard of it. Their mistake? They used canned chili so they flunked. The same two guys also flunked an assignment in social studies when they brought in some fortune cookies which they claimed to have made. They knew how to make them since we had taken a field trip and saw them being made. Their mistake there was using pre-printed fortunes. Although you can buy them now, I doubt you could have in those days. They were just not good liars. One tried to say he had typed up the fortunes at home. Always wondered what happened to them. One apparently lived in my apartment before I moved in because his driver's license was delivered there and it had that address on it. Odd because there were two Chinese college student females there prior to use moving in. So, dunno. |
