Default OT Natural Allergy Relief

I found this to be interesting:

http://www.realsimple.com/health/pre...111/page3.html

I upped my vitamin C consumption perhaps 2 years ago and I have not suffered
much from allergies since.

Any excess vitamin C will be voided by your excretory system so all you do is make the Vitamin C vendors more money. My advice...stay away from those QUACK sites.

May I point out that opium is a very natural product that could cause
you to stop noticing allergies for a while.

Good luck with that suggestion. Actually, too much vitamin C
(alledgely) can be detrimental.

My crazy health food Nazi SiL claims that mega doses of vitamin C can
cure allergies.

She is under the impression that all natural products are automatically
good for you. Years ago she was pushing Celestial Seasonings teas. I
dared to suggest that you don't know what is in those herbal teas and
they might actually be toxins. She rejected that possibility, but a
just a few weeks later there was a news story about a woman who was
hospitalized after ODing on atropine. Seems that the compound was in one
of the mysterious herbs and flowers in the tea. Thinking that it is all
organize and therefore good for you, she was drinking 20-30 cups a day.

There are a lot of natural and organic compounds that are deadly.

I actually knew Linus Pauling, the great vitamin C guru (my supervisor's
professor and two real Nobel prizes too!) and he had me taking large
quantities of C for years to no effect or detriment either.

What? No. I have food intolerances. Not allergies. And this is for
seasonal allergies. Not food allergies. Not the same thing.

I have read about the vitamin C in many places. It's cheap and it won't
hurt you.

I will not take herbs willy nilly. When they first came out with Pirates
Booty and related snacks, it was all loaded with herbs. I don't like those
kinds of snacks to begin with but when I was gifted with a case, I got rid
of it.

I don't know if they had complaints or what. The snacks were purported to
make you feel good.

I don't know if they quit making them for a time but they are making them
again now, with less variety and no herbs.

I do take herbs for very septic things and sometimes just short term. I
believe that I had an allergic reaction to Pau D'Arco so I quit taking it.
It made my lips go numb.

"Can vitamin C be harmful?

Taking too much vitamin C can cause diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps. In people
with a condition called hemochromatosis, which causes the body to store too much
iron, high doses of vitamin C could worsen iron overload and damage body tissues."

It goes on to say that excess Vit C can have a negative interaction with some
prescribed medications, and with chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

possible links between excess vit c and kidney stones; and early
miscarriage

And I'm sure that people who have that condition would know this. I worked
with a lady who had it and she was very careful with her diet.

And people who take those things or are on those treatments likely would
know it too.

Taking excess vitamins would not be advised for pregnant women. Can't speak
for the kidney stones.

I don't know about Vitamin C. When I moved to where I now live (upper Midwest) I suffered from allergies big time. First summer here was heck. I love this area, though, and a farmer told me to chew a little fresh honeycomb, 3/4-1inch square every day. Went through three honeycombs and quit. I never even really noticed that I was no longer tearing up and sneezing. It worked, though. No attacks.

I sure don't know the science; but I buy one honey comb per year, consume it over two or three weeks, and I have yet to have an attack again.

Gotta be local honey, though, because that contains the allergens in the area. Kind of a crude vaccination of sorts. I dunno, just know it worked well for me.

Wrong. Vitamin C is metabolized via oxalate,
so large doses can give you kidney stones.
You can't absorb much more that 400 milligrams
daily, so very high doses (above 1000 mg daily)
increase risk of kidney stones while providing
no benefit at all. If you want higher doses,
you have to get it by injection.

Great citation/site, thanks lucretia! And I quote:

"How much vitamin C do I need?

The amount of vitamin C you need each day depends on your age. Average
daily recommended amounts for different ages are listed below in
milligrams (mg).

Life Stage Recommended Amount
Birth to 6 months 40 mg
Infants 7–12 months 50 mg
Children 1–3 years 15 mg
Children 4–8 years 25 mg
Children 9–13 years 45 mg
Teens 14–18 years (boys) 75 mg
Teens 14–18 years (girls) 65 mg
Adults (men) 90 mg
Adults (women) 75 mg
Pregnant teens 80 mg
Pregnant women 85 mg
Breastfeeding teens 115 mg
Breastfeeding women 120 mg

If you smoke, add 35 mg to the above values to calculate your total
daily recommended amount."

If Julie actually read the link, nowhere does it say taking tons of
Vitamin C is really harmful but it's pretty much useless. And it can be
a problem in terms of drug interactions and specific medical conditions.
Still, there is no need to dose yourself with tons of Vitamin C. It
won't be any more beneficial. As others have said, it just gets peed
out. Your body can only absorb so much of it. The rest is waste
going down the toilet but the money goes right into the pockets of the
alleged health supplement company.

Helps prevent toxic chemotherapy from working properly. Sure.

Much over 2000 will produce diarea. Tolerance level and weight taken into
account.

Spreading out dose is better.

Helps reduce bad effects of smoking.

My brothers doctor recommended it for some kind of problem he was having.

I've been taking it for 40+ years.

I just found, using 1000-1500 of c, reduce blood glucose levels. Much over
that can increase glucose levels.

Hmmm... I take 2,000 mg daily in split doses plus whatever is in my multi.
I will check that out.

That's okay. Her husband doesn't like placebo and the daughter won't
even try it.

Indeed it is. What was I thinking? I stand corrected.

Unless specified what level it's drivel... anything at "high" levels
can be toxic, even water.

Vitamins ideally should always be taken under the auspices of ones
medical professional... which suppliments and how much depend on
several factors, such as usual diet, blood work, age, weight, sex,
ones medications, etc. That said the typical one a day OTC
multi-vitamins don't contain enough of any one ingredient to be toxic
to the average individual, unless one has a particular medical
condition and/or is taking particular Rx meds they are safe...
everyone should have a complete physical once a year, that's when to
discuss suppliments.

But vitamin C does have a mild anti-histamine effect -
