"The new sign on French menus

"The summer rush to France - a magnet for more foreign tourists than
any other country - is about to begin. And this year travellers may
spot a new logo on menus, designed to flag up when food has been
home-made."

My opinion of "home cooking" was summed up in a Don Martin parody of
"Meals my mother made me" or somesuch, a sappy poem I think by Edgar
A. Guest that appeared in Mad in the late fifties or early sixties.

Some good came of it though. What passed for "home cooking" in our
house was why I taught myself to cook.

For decades now, the French have turned to various outlets that sell
nothing but deeply frozen foods, to pad out their meals or to
completely replace home cooking. These are known as "surgeles."

I would not be a bit surprised if French restaurants were also
turning to serving prefab foods, as well.

Here in the US, restaurants would say their dishes were "House-made,"
i.e. made in-house, rather than "Home-made," implying a lack of skill
or refinement.
