I pan fried same a few months ago and was kind of tough. I think i cooked

Can't tell you on the roast but the steaks are already cooked. Sounds like
you cooked for too long. Perhaps 2 minutes on each side, if that.

They're fabulous cooked on a grill, gas or charcoal, and served with mashed potatoes and fried apples. Depends on how hot your grill is about 7 or 8 minutes per side does it.

Why Julie thinks those ham steaks are already cooked is anybody's guess when you clearly stated you bought a quarter hog.

I read it that he had two entirely different things. Ham steak and then the
1/4 hog. Now I suppose it is possible to have uncooked ham steaks but the
ones we get here are already cooked.

The biggest question: is this a fresh ham steak, or a commercially cured
ham steak, or a country-style cured and smoked ham.

I suggest you call whoever sold you the 1/4 hog. They know the curing method
used. Some hams have to be cooked in water, then baked. Others just need to
be baked, and still others are fully cooked.

I didn't reply because I didn't know what the hell he was talking
about. He said the roast was smoked. I've never heard of a smoked
roast and it doesn't sound very appetizing if it's anything like
smoked pork chops. I'd just cut it up into small pieces and use it to
flavor beans. No idea how to treat a fresh ham steak. Actually, I do
but I have no practical experience so it's only theory. That's why we
have the internet. Google it.

Surely he has a modicum of internet skills if he managed to find
usenet.

He didn't say that it was a fresh steak either but if the roast was smoked
then most likely the steak would be too.

It was too clueless to be an honest question, especially considering
usenet is almost impossible for the majority of people to find these
days.
