Default Fresh Ginger Moscow Mule

http://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/fre...MzA2MTQ0NDQ0S0

I can't tell you how delicious this sounds to me. I don't want to
strain grated ginger through my teeth, so I'll make a ginger flavored
simple syrup instead. Putting vodka and club soda on my shopping
list!!!

2 oz. vodka
1½ oz. simple syrup
1 oz. fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon finely grated peeled ginger
2 oz. club soda
1 lime wedge
Candied ginger (for serving)

Combine vodka, simple syrup, lime juice, and ginger in a cocktail
shaker; fill shaker with ice. Shake until outside of shaker is frosty,
about 30 seconds. Strain into a highball glass filled with ice; top
off with club soda and garnish with lime wedge and candied ginger.

Vodka and club soda with lime is my go-to drink. This sounds like it
would be extremely good. Thanks for posting it!

I'm so glad I posted that recipe, because I didn't know about ginger
liqueur. Thanks for the tip!

You're very welcome!

I ended up not getting what I wanted. I bought the ginger, so I'll
make ginger simple syrup tonight and resume purchasing the other parts
tomorrow. I didn't buy any club soda because the only container was
huge and I wanted individual small bottles, so I'll look for them
somewhere else. In any case, I need to find out what the difference
is between club soda, seltzer water and sparkling water is. They're
all fizzy, are they interchangeable?

So what's the difference between this recipe and the original Moscow Mule
recipe which uses ginger beer?

BTW, in my own variation, I make a mango mule using mango vodka. And if
you can find it in your area, the best ginger beer I've ever had is Fever
Tree.

Somehow, this conjured up thoughts of a Soviet past, where for some
arbitrary reason, ginger was banned from Moscow (maybe Stalin had
hated it, and branded it counter-revolutionary), and folks traveling
to the capital stuffing their asses with ginger roots. Lord help
them if the KGB subjected them to a cavity search.

To this very day, many older Muscovites thank Comrade Khrushchev for
access to ginger that doesn't "taste like ass."

I don't know, I've never had one... however, ginger beer is hard to
find. I looked specifically for it yesterday. It wasn't with the
beers so I snagged an upper level store worker. He looked in the soda
section and I told him if it was stocked there someone made a mistake,
because it wasn't a soft drink - so he looked with the beers. There
were lots of different hard cider brands, but no ginger beer. He was
absolutely positive they had it so he spent quite a bit of time in the
back searching for it and came back empty handed.... so at this point
in time, I'd say it's more convenient to make from scratch than it is
to run around town trying to find ginger beer.

Thanks, but I think I'll be lucky to find just one brand and will take
whatever brand I can get.

If you don't have a cocktail shaker, I'd use a regular kitchen
strainer. I love ginger simple syrup and add it to a glass of
sparkling mineral water.

U'mmm, ginger beer _is_ a soft drink. It's non-alcoholic, and if a store
carries it, it _will_ be in with the sodas. Basically ginger beer is
ginger ale on steroids, a much more concentrated, spicier ginger taste,
but again, non-alcoholic.

It's not really mainstream, so it's not surprising that your store
doesn't carry it, although most of the markets in my area (north central
Massachusetts) do. Since it's used as a mixer in several things (Moscow
Mules, Dark'n'Stormys, etc.) you can also often find it in liqour stores.

Frankly, I'd never even heard of making a Mule with club soda and fresh
ginger before your post. And neither had my daughter, who was a
bartender in Boston for a number of years. But it _does_ sound good.

OH! Well, that flies in the face of what I was lead to expect. Huh.
Well I guess I can substitute ginger ale for it then.

It's not worth the bother now that you've told me it's just another
soft drink. I'll buy it if I see it, but I'm not going to expend any
energy trying to find a soft drink that's basically ginger ale.

Agree. I was never very interested trying a Moscow Mule until I saw
that recipe. I made the ginger simple syrup last night, so I'm on my
way to making a Mule. Thanks and thanks for checking with your DD.

Ummm..._some_ ginger beer is non-alcoholic. Some is brewed.

Returning to the State of Confusion now. So, which one do I use with
a Moscow Mule?

True that. I love the ginger beer soft drink, which is getting harder
and harder to find around here. I have also had ginger beer, which I was
not so keen on.

Too bad, because I do like the San Jose style Chavela (Chabela) which
is light or dark Mexican Cerveza (beer) with a shot of tequila (no
Clamato juice) - so I visualized a Moscow Mule as being similar.

I stand corrected. I'd never heard of alcoholic ginger beer before, but
yes, indeed, it does exist.

But mixed drinks like the Moscow Mule or the Dark'n'Stormy are made with
the non-alcoholic stuff. Frankly, mixing ginger, sugar, vodka, and an
alcoholic brewed substance doesn't sound very appealing to me.

BTW, you probably _can_ make a Moscow Mule using ginger ale. You could
_probably_ make one using tomato juice or milk. But it just wouldn't be
the same...oh, forgot: IMHO!

Of course I did. When I saw the word, "mule," I thought of drug mule.
I saw something the other day where some Right-wing nutcase was saying
that more of undocumented kids coming across the southern border were
drug smugglers than legitimate refugees.

I assumed that no one would take it seriously. Only Sheldon would post
something that nutty and expect folks to believe it.
