Yep. I tried to filter our village idiot but there are a couple others
who are compulsive responders, quote the entire idiotic post only to add
a line at the end.

If you go into that site, the 'medium' is highlighted and the 'small and
large' are not. BUT click on on of them and Bingo, it gets highlighted.

I just don't deal with Visa much any more.
FWIW... My wife just breezed through here and asked my about my kayaking
today and I said how nice the creek was. She asked if that was the creek
by the restaurant where they tried to rip us off on the Visa card.

Wow. Here I thought the Costco pumps were safe because they are so busy and
there's always an attendant. Pretty sure they got mine at a gas pump once.
I had to put gas in a rental car to return it and for reasons we couldn't
put our fingers on, daughter and I both had bad feelings about this gas
station. I have since looked it up and the store attached to it got high
reviews on Yelp. But ever since then we have seen suspicious looking people
hanging out there. We didn't really see anything wrong on that day. We
just had bad feelings. I got the gas quickly and left. I didn't see or
feel a skimmer and I do check. The charges came in, in the middle of the
night right after. Skater clothing and shoes, expensive sunglasses and
headphones. Guy lived in TN. They gave me his name.

I had a credit card number stolen a few years ago. I must say the people
that stole the number were going by train through Switzerland, so they were
on an adventure at least. Thieves.

Or maybe it was their way of trying to outrun the authorities.

I bank with BECU and they were hacked! They had to replace all of our Visa
cards.

Those pesky foreign folks have been sending me a lot of email as
Hawaiian Telecom saying that my email account has reached it's limit or
that it's overhauling the mail system and I need to log in. They're
really ramping up the phishing.

The one I got yesterday was really sweet. It's a series of 5 delivery
failure emails followed by a notice saying that the account is in
violation of the terms of service and my computer was spamming. That one
was pretty alarming. After checking my office computers, it appears that
the delivery failure emails were the setup and the real phish came
later. They almost got me that time!

Unfortunately it does happen. I don't know what hubby did, but he
never turns his computer off and it was spamming 24-7. I ignored the
first couple of emails from my ISP, but finally called them to see
what was going on and it wasn't easy to fix.

Like most good magic tricks and scams, you have to distract your mark
from what they should be really looking at. Normally, I'd just ignore
email from Hawaiian Telcom.

My step-mom's nephew from Sweden just married a gal from your fair city.
The strange thing is that her parents live on the big island and my dad
knows them. I can't begin to fathom how something like that happens in
this big old world.

I wasted a big chunk of time today. Got an email from Frontier telling me
that I needed to upgrade my mail or third parties could read my messages.
Sounded bogus so I started an online chat with them only to discover that I
has started the wrong online chat.

Got into the right chat. Waited. Had to verify stuff. Seems it was legit.
K. Went back to the email and clicked on the link to tell me what to do.
Seems it was a video. I was like... Why would they do a video instead of
just listing the steps? Only there were no actual video there. Just a
black screen.

So started another chat. Repeat above. Guy types out all of the
instructions and... All of my settings were correct!

But to close one screen it forced me to enter a bunch of survey stuff for
them about how my customer service experience went? Then when I got home
later, I got two emails asking me to do more surveys. Uh no. Buy a clue
people! Don't just assume that everyone has no clue how to configure their
email. Sheesh.

Frontier email sounds like a real drag. Looks like you're paying a lot for this free service.

I don't think Frontier email is free, seeing as how I had to pay for it.
And I spent about 2 hours in phone calls again tonight! Seems each time I
try to send a pic from my phone to my email, it screws things up. I don't
know how. Guy on the phone was trying to tell me that it was my AV. Nope.
Both times I kept getting an error message that I didn't have an account.
The pics would send sporadically. One one send. Then I could try 15 times
and it wouldn't.

Guy on the phone told me to retrieve pics via Webmail which is now Yahoo. I
wasn't thinking when he said this. If they didn't send, they didn't send!
And they didn't send to Webmail either. So while waiting on hold for the
third time... First time they hung up on me and never called back... Tada!
Last pic sent.

I don't know what's going on there except that they seem to have a bunch of
idiots.

Usenet gives them no financial incentive to do so, since it isn't
owned by anyone. With no responsible party, there's no interest in
doing anything to change the Usenet experience. And *that*, boys and
girls, is the real reason most ISPs dumped Usenet support. Unlike the
WWW, Usenet makes no money for anyone. Better to push people onto the
Web, where they can pay for their experiences via advertising and data
scraping.

Although I use Google Groups, I recognize that it an awful product.

This certainly sounds reasonable and true. Hopefully, the boys and girls can live with that reality.

People are going to web forums because they are moderated and the crap
that goes on here is deleted there.

It's like a war zone down here. My guess is that when this is all gone,
we'll look back fondly on Usenet. Strange but true - I think.

I'm okay with some moderation but... You can really get mods who overstep
their bounds IMO and that I don't like. Plus these days you usually have to
join to post on forums. Just too hard to get rid of all the spam if they
don't do otherwise.

I would miss "the crap". The arguments people have on Usenet are a
reflection of the differing opinions in our society. Sometimes a good
Usenet argument is stimulating and fun, especially with a "worthy foe"

I belong to quite a few forums that are moderated and have even served
my term as moderator on several. Moderation does keep the fighting
down, but it is censorship, and, given the choice, Id rather fight than
be censored.

Oh yes! It is easy to ignore or killfile. I don't need to have someone
else restrict what I may see.

I don't, honestly. I belong to several cooking groups on FB and only
one of them is anything like this.

Their group, their rules. Don't want to play by their rules, go
somewhere else.

Which is fine by me.

That's why you're here and not elsewhere. Most people don't want to
put up with that kind of stuff and won't - so they are not here.

Your problem is that you place too much value in free speech. :-)

This puts the dampener on the notion that cooks are mellow, passive,
folks. I never would have guessed... :-)

Yeah, what's the deal? All the cooks I've known were very cool and open
folks. It's those TV chefs to blame I tell ya! (-:

Agreed. So what if there's 'crap', as you say. At least with Usenet,
people can freely express themselves without fear of moderation, and
by extension read other people's uncensored posts, no matter how crazy
they might be. Plus, it's in plain text... without all the HTML bloat
and misc irrelevant crap that goes with that.

Also hard to find a good moderator, by that I mean one that is truly
impartial and can distance themselves from their own personal biases.
I'm a moderator for one forum, I think Usenet is a good training
ground, or at least can be, for such a task.

That'd be a minor reason. Fact is, most people have no clue that
Usenet even exists. Even with a web-based Usenet site, would find it
too clunky to navigate. They're accustomed to Faecebook, etc.

Dunno I don't watch them any more. They are not a patch on the early ones
.... I tell ya!
