Default New favorite food!

I found a bag of Brazil nuts that I forgot I bought from nuts.com. Was
pleasantly surprised to see that they were not only roasted but salted!
Only time I ever had them that was before was in a can of mixed nuts and
they were oddly oily. But these are very yummy. I do love raw ones and
that's how I usually buy them. These are even better though.

They will make you gain weight and you will lose your sylvan shape.

Hush, Roy! She found something she likes. She forgot she had them so
she undoubtedly didn't check the "expiration date".

Roasting is for cashews, peanuts and sunflower kernels. All other nuts are
way better raw.

I stand corrected. Chestnuts too, but not Brazils.

Hmmm, I'm not a big Brazil nut fan, but I confess I've only had them
roasted and salted.

Among other nuts I've had regularly raw and roasted are the pecan and
pinon - each has its value raw and cooked, so maybe I'm less of a purist
in taste.

Brazil nuts are one of my favorites, I also like almonds that are
roasted and salted. One day I roasted them a little too long, so I will
try to avoid doing that again.

Brazil nuts are a favorite of mine too. I'm just grateful that they
can be purchased already free of the shell. I hated that darn shell
when I was a kid. All I ever secured from it was bits and pieces.

It must be the high fat content in pecans that has me - and boy candied

Key experience when younger, the roasted chestnut carts in NYC. I'm
certain you've been there, done that.

Nuts are low in saturated fats, it is thought that eating nuts can lower
your chances of having a heart attack by 35%.

I love pecan pie, George thinks they are too sweet, which means more pie
for me. I will have pecan pie maybe once every year or two. Wish it was
more often, but I am trying to behave.

The past few weeks I've been on a Brazil nut binge (okay, slight
exaggeration) because the produce market has had nice packages
of them ... they've been carrying more nuts that way but I can't
resist Brazil nuts. Roasted and salted. I don't seem to leave the
store without them anymore.

As a child and teenager I used to like eating raw wild hazel nuts.

Nuts dont expire. They are "Best before". So the better something is before "Best before" , the longer it lasts after the decline haha.

I always thought that I hated cashews. Until I tried raw ones. They're
good. Some roasted ones are good but many are too oily for me. Sunflower
seeds are kind of neutral for me, raw or roasted. Don't really like or
dislike them.

Of course they do, nuts contain lots of oil so they go rancid fast.

Nuts high in omega-6 go rancid quickly. The high monounsaturate nuts
go rancid more slowly. In a mixed nut batch, the walnuts and Brazils
go bad sooner than the hazelnuts, pecans and almonds. Rancid fats are
very unhealthful, far worse than saturated fats.

Don't you have to go to Buffalo, NY for that?

I have had nuts get rancid pretty quickly if not kept in the freezer.

I'm fairly sure I saw a restaurant in the NYC area on Food Network that
specializes in it, but yes, it's a classic Buffalo dish.

Brazil nuts are easy to shell... freeze first... freezing doesn't hurt
nuts and keeps them from quickly going rancid.

While the sugar is not particularly good for you, pecans are high in
monounsaturated fat, which is good, and if you also choose a good fat
to make the crust, you don't have to feel that pecan pie is all that
bad.

That's a smell that gets ingrained in your head for life.

The carts in NYC had glowing red coals inside, and oh that aroma, wow.

I saw roasted chestnuts being sold from a cart in China (didn't buy
any because I don't like chestnuts). They sold roasted corn that way
too.

When I make fruit pies, I use a crust recipe that is mostly almond meal
and pecan meal. I have used a thicker version for a sugar-free pecan
pie that I used to make for my DH because he was diabetic. It wasn't
quite authentic, but he liked it and it was the only pecan pie he could eat.

Have been to NY, but I missed seeing the roasted chestnut carts, I would
love to try them, some day. The closest we would have to that, around
here, would be the elote carts.
