You could tell the difference. Well now, I do know someone whose ex kept calling her day and night at all hours for weeks on end and she finally got a TRO against him for...wait for it...stalking! So I consider unwanted calls that keep coming after you have asked them to stop to be stalking, I don't care what you call it. If you post your number, I will refer the telemarketers to you. Cheri |

But not as bad as the stalker showing up in my backyard waiting for me, calling me to meet here or there, etc. etc. There is a difference between random computer generated calls, and the systematic and constant stalking by an individual. if telemarketing calls are stalking, why don't you get a Restraining Order? |

The Do Not Call is supposed to handle it, but they are useless and should just stop pretending that they're doing anything but collecting a salary. It wouldn't surprise me if they were selling the DNC lists. LOL Cheri |

It seems that the previous owner of the number had owed money to a LOT of people and they were constantly on the phone wanting to speak to Mr X. Ms. O, we bought a cell phone in Louisiana in 2006, and we kept getting calls from collection agencies for "Hank" or "Henry", after about 3 years, those telephone calls ended. We moved back to Texas, and now we get calls on our house phone for "Julie", apparently she was a deadbeat, just like Hank. We bought the house my ex-husband grew up in, and I thought about keeping my deceased MIL's phone number, just to keep that from happening again, but I thought that would be too weird, even for me. Debt collectors are not allowed to call your cell phone you can be awarded money for damages. An article in the paper last Sunday recounted a situation similar to yours and he was awarded $30,000. He had a log and proof of the calls and went to court. |

The programs run through a random list of numbers and if they reach an answering machine (or a fax machine tone) they simply disconnect. I'm not saying they wouldn't have been capable of jotting down a new number but I didn't want to confuse the issue. Same address, same phone number. Not to mention it's a PITA to have to notify everyone you do want know (friends, family, businesses) about a new number. BTDT, usually forgot someone. I was never really bothered by telemarketing calls at this number until about three years ago. Suddenly, wow! The DNC list does seem to have cut down on some of the repetitive numbers that were calling, but it takes time. The robo-calls are the ones we can't seem to avoid. Some people have suggested spending MONEY to buy call blocking gizmos. We shouldn't have to do that. I'm not about to. These telemarketers/often scammers do the equivalent of nym-shifting. They spoof/hijack legitimate numbers so they can slip through the DNC list cracks. If I don't recognize the name/number, I simply don't answer the phone. Then again, the sound of the phone ringing doesn't bother me like it does the OP. I have no trouble ignoring it unless I'm expecting a call, in which case I'll check the caller ID. Do I know you? If not, nope. Leave a message. Jill |

I can't for the life of me remember if caller ID said it was from that vague "mortgage loan" or "auto insurance". Some such BS. The area code remained the same but the number kept morphing and it wasn't even the same exchange much less sequential extension numbers. One day I had ENOUGH. I finally picked up the phone and before the guy got three words out I yelled at the top of my voice, "NO!!! NO! NO! NO! NO!". I added a few choice curse words before saying "DO NOT CALL!" I haven't gotten a call from that particular area code since. :-D The problem with that method is you have to get fed up enough to answer the phone. LOL Jill |

As soon as he said there was a problem with our Windows DH had a few choice words to say to him too! That was on our landline though and is unusual. -- http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/shop/ |

I used to have a device attached to my landline. It recognized a pause while the computer sorted out if it had reached a real ringing phone or whatever it does. This device would just hang up before I even knew a call was coming in. Seems an app could do that for a smart phone, at least. nancy |

That was > hellish. It seems that the previous owner of the number had owed money to > a LOT of people and they were constantly on the phone wanting to speak to > Mr X. In the end we got the number changed and all that stopped. I have been missing a lot of calls lately. Due to the hot weather, I have been sleeping on the couch because there is a ceiling fan right over it. But my back and neck are telling me that this is gonna have to end. Heh. Anyway... I keep forgetting to take the cordless phone with me. And people are calling early in the morning. People who know me well know not to call me then unless it is important. But in looking back through the numbers, none are ones that I recognize. One said "Private Caller, Private Number." I wrongly assumed that this was an old friend who recently got back into contact with me. His mom died and he moved back into that house temporarily to settle affairs and such. His dad had been a judge in Seattle so I could see that number being unlisted. But... He said he hadn't called that morning. So no clue who that was. I also had a call that just said, "Market". No clue who that might have been. I also get tons of calls from Copper Creek. I had to look them up online. They go by another name as well but that escapes me. They sell CPAP supplies. You can not actually answer these calls. They always tell you to call the number. Which I have done and told them many times to put me on their Do Not Call List. Each time they tell me brightly that they are my supplier (they never were) and I am due for supplies. Then when I tell them that I haven't used a CPAP machine for years, they try to tell me that they are just following up on people who haven't gotten supplies for years. Uh huh. I got my stuff from STAT medical and it is in no way related to them. The last time I tried to ask her who she was calling for because my husband also has a CPAP machine but never uses it. She hung up on me. Then I started getting the calls about credit cards again. Always some woman. She gives her name. All automated. And automated calls about duct cleaning or carpet cleaning. But one of the worst was a woman who called, asking me about a radio survey. I'd had a particularly rough night for reasons that escape me now but I had a serious lack of sleep and was really out of it. At the time, I could not remember the name of the station I listened to. So she said, "Oldies?" And I said, "No, not oldies. It's the one that plays all the hits!" Her reply was, "All the oldies hits?" Feeling frustrated, I snapped at her. I couldn't remember the call letters, the dial numbers or even who the DJs were. I just told her to never mind and hung up on her. And then I thought... Brooke and Jubal! That's who they are! |

I have had Panasonic, VTech and AT&T cordless, and by far the best audio quality (no static) is Panasonic.
They have a wide range of options. I don't have backup batteries, but I would guess they make them. The worst for static was VTech by a long shot. My current set has four handsets and the base has the answering machine. N |

Funny as I'm writing this post there is a telemarketing > call coming in from DES MOINES IA 515-248-7685. LOL Those Microsoft calls are the worst. The first time I got one, I called my brother about it. He hadn't left for work yet. He told me who to report the guy to. So I did and I told him that I did. But to stall him and try to look up the number he was calling from, my brother had me play dumb. I pretended that I was trying to do what he said but couldn't figure out how to do it. I kept the guy on the phone for at least an hour. And then after I told him that I had reported him, he had the nerve to call me back and twice! Those times I just ripped into him. Told him he was calling someone in the land of Microsoft and that I knew people who worked there. Microsoft just wouldn't do such a thing. What really worries me though is that my mom might get such a call and I have a feeling she would fall for it. Some distant relative got the bogus call from the grandchild and they wired the scammer every dime that they had. She was sticking up for the relative and saying that of course anyone would have given all of their money in such a situation. There was no talking sense to her. She herself got such a call not long before this from a man saying he was her favorite grandson. I think the only reason she didn't fall for that was because her one and only grandson had literally just left her house and was in fact getting into his truck in the driveway as the call came in. She could look out on the window and see him. So she told the crook, "You're not ____!" Giving him the name of her grandson. Then of course the scammer called right back, using the name she had just given him. She hung up on him. Unfortunately it would seem that when people get senile, all sense of normal reasoning goes out the window. They will reason things out, but the way they do it only makes sense to them. Of course they are just as likely to forget what they have said once they have reasoned it all out in their own fashion. |

One of the best ones I had was some kind of Disney Princess phone. Best in terms of call quality but it only seemed to last for a couple of years and then died. I've bought whatever brand Costco sells. Can't remember. They're good but you have to buy so many of them. |

The DNC list is for legitimate businesses to abide by - and the vast majority of legitimate businesses DO honor it. Your problem (really, everyone's problem) is with the criminals who are making a living using the telephone as well as email and internet to scam people. Criminals, by definition, don't follow the law. So the existence of the DNC means nothing to them. They know about it, the fact that they ignore it tells you all you need to know: the caller is a criminal. Expecting a criminal to honor the DNC is as unrealistic as expecting a burglar to honor a "keep out" sign. |

I do know many people who recognize the extreme difficulty of finding an effective and universal solution for it. There's NoMoRobo, which has been endorsed by the FTC, but not every phone carrier enables it. You can enter your phone number on their website and they'll tell you if it will work for you - and if not, they'll give you contact info for your phone company, so you can ask them to enable it. https://www.nomorobo.com/ But crooks will be crooks, and stealing via telephone swindle schemes is cheap, simple, and effective, thanks to autodialers and offshoring. Also thanks to the fact that the majority of people who get these calls persist in thinking these people are legitimate businesses offering legitimate services, when they are not. The DNC is designed to stop legit firms from calling people who don't want to be bothered. Crooks pay no attention to laws. |
