10 for $10 at Publix. Nice price, given they cost much more 2 weeks ago
so I ignored them. No, I don't plan to buy 10 of them. I also don't plan to cut one in half and wonder how to keep the other half from turning brown. ![]() just cut it, remove the pit and eat. No guac for me; I never was a big fan of it. But a nice ripe avocado, yum! ![]() Jill |

I love eating them on their own, but also like guac too. |

I just know they were a lot more expensive a couple of weeks ago. They may very well be bland. If they're huge I probably won't buy them. I do know how to test for ripeness. I'm not planning to buy more than a couple or three of them. I don't care for guacamole; then again I have no real reason to make any sort of dip. I just like to eat avocado, all by itself. Jill |

They are often just a dollar here. I was at ValuMarket this morn and
they had the big round ones and the smaller dark green skin ones. The big ones were $1.49 and the smaller just a dollar. I added some avocado to my Subway veggie sub when I came home. I've tried the avocado Subway periodically sells and it was kind of disgusting and bland. It was like they pureed some unripe avocadoes and added some salt to try and make it palatable. |

I'll have to see what the local Great Wall Chinese supermarket charges. I don't go there very often since their parking lot is a bit meager. At the current high prices for lemons they seem to have the cheapest ones; about half the price the Giant wants. -- Jim Silverton (Potomac, MD) Extraneous "not." in Reply To. |

I think you have to be a lot closer to California to find them for much less than $1 each. You and I are hell and gone from the west coast. And lemons or limes. I don't like going in there because I don't speak Spanish and they [pretend?] don't speak English. They don't believe in giving back change, either. It doesn't matter if it's two cents or a quarter. If you don't give them the exact amount don't expect to get change back. Funny how they can slap US price tags on items yet they can't figure out how to make change for a dollar... Jill |

The regular price of avocados in the Houston area is 48 cents, but you can find them on sale for less. It depends on what store, also, the cheapest prices are at the Asian market. Becca |

Houston is at least 50% Hispanic and they shop there. I will try to sneak a photo next time. Becca |

As I said before, I bought huge Hass-like avocados from Peru at 3 for $1 a couple of weeks ago. I don't consider Smart & Final/Cash & Carry or even Grocery Warehouse as first choice stores to shop in. Go there for whatever you can find cheap and finish shopping at a regular supermarket. -- Never trust a dog to watch your food. |

They are a fairly small store, much smaller than Safeway for instance, and a lot of stuff is in individual packages instead of huge packages. They don't have a lot of produce but what they do have seems fairly nice. The best buy this week is S-Mart with the butcher bacon Applewood Smoked thick slices for 2.99 a pound. It's very nice looking bacon I did cook a couple of slices, it cooked up nice and didn't shrink a whole lot. I don't know about the prices in the Bay Area stores because they're usually higher than here. Cheri |

Perhaps Mr. Hass really was Mr. Haas at some point in his life. Lots of people changed the spellings of their names way back when, for various reasons. There are a number of different spellings of my last name (although I'm told McQuown is the original sp). Years ago someone whose name was spelled McEwen contacted me and said he'd traced his ancestry back to Pennsylvania, when the name was still spelled the same as mine. My mother sometimes purposely mispronounced our last name because she didn't feel like trying to explain it. ![]() Jill |
