Depends on the distance. When I was in elementary school the kids from
the other side of a major highway were bused, but everyone else
walked, and there was no municipal bus service. I lived in a small city
in high school and if you were 2 miles or more you got free bus tickets
to use on the city buses. Very few students walk to school these days.,
but a lot of that is related to bad planning and poor locations. For
instance, the town where I live in used to have two high schools but
the town was a amalgamation of smaller villages. One high school was in
one village and the second was in another, more rural village. The kids
in town all walked and only the farm kids got bused. The new high school
was built between the two villages and there are only about a dozen kids
who are close enough to walk. Everyone has to be bused.

We also have public schools and Catholic separate schools. Most of the
schools are scattered about and would be close enough for most kids to
walk, but we end up with students having to be bused past on school to
the next one because it is the other board's school. It is ludicrous.
Transportation in a major expense.

In Philly we had no school buses. We walked or took the city public bus
that we paid for. Normal fare was 25 cents, but we could buy school
tokens for 15 cents. Most elementary schools were a fairly easy walk.
High school coulb e over 5 miles. In my case, it was just under two
miles. We often walked and saved those bus tokens so we could use the
money for cigarettes.

Yes, same situation here. Luckily I have never had to commute
behind a school bus, but I've seen how it goes. Hello, it's a
busy road and people are trying to get to work.

There was some uproar a few years ago, windy 2 lane but very busy
road. One house had a special needs child. They would put him
on the bus, then the driver and the mother would talk, all the
while people are reaching their boiling point. Horns were involved,
probably yelling. I guess. Mother was very upset because the child
was getting upset.

Uh ... how about putting him on the bus and skipping the chit chat,
or pull into the driveway. Some consideration for the people waiting.

Absolutely. Years ago all the kids would gather on my lawn. My
neighbor told the bus driver They don't even have kids, why are you
stopping there? We don't want anyone to seem like they're getting
door to door service. That's sure different than what I've seen
more recently.

Before anything thinks anything, having the kids gather in
front of my house didn't bother me in the least, and I never
said boo to anyone about it.

Heh. I can just picture the hullabaloo.
