Default Culantro

I just bought some "culantro" at Walmart. I have a Caribbean cookbook
that calls for it in a number of recipes, but says that you can
substitute cilantro for it, which is what I've been doing since I hadn't
been able to find the real thing.

It was about $2 for a small plastic envelope of the stuff, fresh. I just
tasted it, and it does indeed resemble "regular" cilantro, although it
seems to be a bit stronger. It doesn't look at all like cilantro, and
according to Wikipedia it is not closely related.

I haven't decided yet what I am going to use it in, perhaps a Caribbean
curry, or maybe tomatillo salsa. Should be interesting.

An interesting read on what it is:

Thanks! I misread the Wikipedia article; culantro and cilantro are
indeed closely related.

I just ordered some seeds from eBay, the GF has said she would try it
out in her garden. I'm also going to be on the lookout for it at the
Oriental stores in the area.

Ours are ok, at least as far as produce is concerned. They carry a fair
selection of fresh herbs, but many of them, such as mint, basil,
tarragon, are extremely expensive. They are packed in small transparent
plastic envelopes, and typically cost $2 or $3 for an ounce or less.
They do have cilantro and parsley in large bunches for $1 or so; I use
the cilantro frequently.

Our Walmart carries cilantro, but HEB carries a better quality of
cilantro, they are about 28 cents per bundle. I store mine in the
refrigerator in water.
