NutraSweet to stop making aspartame

Published Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014 | 1:37 p.m.

Updated 32 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — NutraSweet says it will no longer make the artificial
sweetener aspartame and instead concentrate on more profitable sweeteners.

The company expects to shut down a major portion of a plant that employs
about 210 workers by year-end as a result.

NutraSweet CEO William DeFer said in a statement foreign competition was
the primary reason for the decision.

"Low cost imports now dominate the aspartame market, making it
impossible for us to sustain a profitable business while maintaining our
unmatched standard of quality," DeFer said.

NutraSweet noted the plant in Augusta, Georgia had supplied customers
around the world for more than 30 years. In addition to aspartame, it
makes neotame and Twinsweet.

"concentrate on more profitable sweeteners".
By that, do they mean concentrating on artificial sweeteners that show
no sign of having a landslide of impending lawsuits in the future?

I'll have to stock up on it.

Your doctor should be the one drawing blood and testing it, not you.
I currently take .2mg Synthroid but you don't see me drawing my own
blood and testing it using my employers resources (as Kathleen has
openly admitted a few times).

That could be true, but I did go to Smart and Final this morning and buy two
1000 packet boxes. That should last me for my lifetime. :-)

Nah, I'm not worried. I've used it for years and I do know all the
Mercola/Betty Martini horror stories.

I bought a 1000 packet box from Smart and Final years ago. It lasted me
about ten years. They say that it will degrade over time, but this
seemed potent up until I finished the box. The powder did turn a light
tan color, but it didn't seem to affect the taste.

Same with me, I had a small box in the back of a garage cupboard that I
didn't notice for years, it was fine when I used it. I didn't notice a
change of color with it though.

Same here, Cheri, I buy aspartame at our local HEB supermarket and I
have used it for years. I use 1 packet in a 2-cup mug of coffee, and
when I bought aspartame at Walmart, I had to use 4 of them.

Same here. I don't use it that often, but I do like a packet on some
strawberries and things like that. I don't use it in coffee, just cream. :-)
