Default Clementines - Help!

Granddaughter is coming with her parents on Monday and they are leaving
early Friday morning. I had her mom text me a list of what she eats and
on the list of 6 items was clementines.

You cannot buy those little, orange suckers in any quantity less than 5
pounds! I now have a mesh bag of clementines taking up a goodly part of
my fridge.

Q: Can these balls of space-hogging citrus live outside of the
refrigerator?

Not for very long at normal room temp.

A friend's dad built a rack to store citrus in his basement (his Texan
brother would send him grapefruit every year). He rigged a fan to blow
air over it to prevent spoilage. The basement was roughly 55 degrees
during the winter.

If your basement (or garage) was cold enough, I would stash it in a basket
and maybe try the fan thing.

Yes.

I've never refrigerated them. My biggest problem is finding a bag o'
clemmies that are not sour enough to gag a maggot. If you find some
nice sweet one's, they won't last long enough to spoil.

Okay, Thanks everyone. They will be moved to a decorative bowl when I
need the fridge space.

I never refrigerate them. Were they in the refrigerator section in the
store? I was able to buy some "eaches" at Barons last week, just a few
was all we needed.

How small is your fridge... I have some and ate three today... 5 lbs
take very little space, and no law says you have to keep them all in
the same bin... I have some in the fruit bin and some in the veggie
bin.

The kid better EAT them, after all the trouble you've taken. Is she spoiled, maybe?

I don't believe she is spoiled. She is remarkably well behaved and a
very sweet, loving child. She is just an extremely picky eater. I'm
certain she will outgrow it.

I buy oranges twice a year from The Orange Shop. They have to last a
while so I refrigerate them and they keep longer. Just got the Citra
Navels Next shipment will be Honeybells in mid January.

Ok I can't remember an orange going bad on me. I just keep them in a
bowl, but not mixed with other kind of fruit.

Some of us don't have a pantry, so the refrigerator is a good
substitute.

Some of us live in warmer climates and jams and jellies will mold quickly if left out to just sit and do its own thing. Refrigeration stops those weird growths and prolongs its usability.

How do you like the honeybells? I'm always tempted to try some. I have
a box of tangelos coming to me from a FFA fundraiser.

Maybe it's a good thing - I attribute my small size to having been a very picky eater as a kid. Did not develop a ton of f cells, that's for sure. Same weight as out of college.

I was NOT a very sweet, loving child tho - except where dogs were concerned.

When I buy a 10 lb. bag of oranges, they go into the fridge and I TRY to pull one out at night so it's not so @$#% cold in the am. So many things to remember in old age, huh? Just remembering to take pills and close the garage door can be tough.

I was a picky eater, too. kept my weight down most of my life as well.
When I hit 65, Mother Nature said: "here's your belly fat!"

I'm a size 6, no longer a size 4, and most of that is taken up by the
dreaded belly fat.

Same thing happened to my Dad. He was thin as a rail and ate whatever
wasn't nailed down until he hit his 60's then he developed a belly. It
was rock hard and we used to kid him about carrying our brother in there.

Wait - are honeybells and tangelos the same thing? I have enjoyed these

Yes. Honeybell is to tangelo as Pink Lady is to apple.

I've never seen jam sitting out unless it was in little single serve
thingies.
