I keep forgetting about this Melon person until y'all keep
mentioning it. ;-) I used my kill filters on MT newswatcher
last night and have not seen a single post from it since...

Whyncha all do the same? It was easy.

I saw my filter say that there were 350 messages killed this
morning. Did that ass actually post that many???

If it is that desparate to have it's stories read, it needs to
post on alt.sex.stories.moderated. :-P

Ob: food, on picking a ripe cantaloupe. I've gotten really
good at it. I choose by three things. Smell, color and if
the melon is every so slightly soft and gives just a bit
with a squeeze, smells strongly of cantaloupe, and has begun
to turn slightly yellow. I get the yellowest ones I can find.
They are perfect every time now, and my chickens Love the skins.

Same here. Message filter are extremely useful.

I counted at least 200 before I filtered them out.

A.Melon is an anonymous remailer service. Many details about the
messages' origin are masked, however, I do know this spam attack was
done by feeding that crap into a script that submitted it to the
remailer service over and over again.

Anyway, blocking that sender blocks *everyone* who uses that service.
Not a bad idea.

<Snip>

I think so I got so tired I just blocked the sender.

I guess he's too stupid to know about blocking senders.

For what it is worth... the same (A Melon) idiot has been flooding another
newsgroup I read daily (rec.music.opera) where they have had other
virulent troll problems for months.

So this is not just a local newsgroup issue. It seems to be bigger in
scope than that.

A.Melon is an anonymous remailer service, not a person. Killfile that
"person" and you get rid of that whole service, no matter who uses it.

While true, I don't think that's much of a loss. I don't see much
legitimate news traffic in groups like this from anon remailers. There
times when anonymity is necessary for personal security, but I don't see
that here.

Let's hope he stays that ignorant. :-)

I was a bit taken aback when I first signed in last night and
saw over 400 new messages! I set my filters when I saw the reason,
and the number immediately dropped back to the usual 150 or so. <G>

Thanks for reminding me of my filters last night. I seldom use them
so tend to forget about doing that. <G>

does anyone know how to block a sender when using Google Groups? I
read the whole FAQ, and it only seems possible to block curse words
and photos.

There isn't any such capability with groups.google. I recommend getting
a real news service and news reader. You can get free news service from
http://news.individual.net/ and there are a number of good free news
readers.

Google is great for archiving and all that, but as a day-to-day news
service they suck.

Unfortunatley for some of us, it isn't an option. I currently cannot
send or receive email or access newsgroups though my ISP. I can
connect to the internet but I am must use web-based email; access to
newsgroups is through google so that I can post. Switching ISPs is not
do-able. The ISP is the government owned phone company.

You don't have to have news service through your ISP. Sign up for an
account at:

http://news.individual.net

That's what I use at home, because my cheapo dialup doesn't provide
usenet access.
