One of the reasons we offshore jobs is cuz big companies can get away with horrific toxic pollution. Also, last I heard, the GMO farmers are already upping the amt of Roundup and other death juices required to kill the now highly resistant bugs/weeds. The run-off of toxic chemicals from agribiz and CAFO's is killing our waterways. Huge dead zones exist in Hudson Bay, Gulf of Mexico, etc. Love Canal, Hinkley, etc. You think our own country is not poisoning the crap outta us!? There are over 1300 superfund sites around the US. Most will never be cleaned up. They will jes add to the general pollution that threatens to kill us all. nb --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05 * Origin: e> (1:249/999) --- Synchronet 3.15b-Win32 NewsLink 1.92 SpaceSST BBS Usenet <> Fidonet Gateway |

As it goes, you should use floor jacks only to lift cars up on to jack stands or some other redundant support. It ain't real safe to rely on a single jack to hold your big old American car off of your body. The hydralic pressure in the jack is retained by a tiny little needle valve - like a giant boulder being held by a finger. My suggestion is that you learn proper floor jack safty. You must have been asleep when they taught this in auto shop 101. :-) --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05 * Origin: e> (1:249/999) --- Synchronet 3.15b-Win32 NewsLink 1.92 SpaceSST BBS Usenet <> Fidonet Gateway |

I'm merely stating the quality of the products they do make for US companies is controlled by that US company! China does not set the bar. "Make us a $5 widget for $1." You actually think that $1 widget is gonna be quality? > You mentioned Japan but their economy was nowhere near as big or > dominant as is China's. No one's economy is as big as China's. But, at the height of their economic prosperity, Japan had the largest, strongest, and most robust economy in the World. At least according to Time magazine. At least until their bubble exploded, too. > I really question your patriotism! Question away!! I'll be the first to assure you, I have very little patriotism left for this country. Despite having served, this county has shown, over and over, it doesn't give a rat's ass about it's veterans or the "common man". We live in a total police state (no! I didn't stutter), our constittuional rights have been long ago stripped away, and the govt is killing us jes as fast as they can shovel money into big pharma's pockets. As for that old redneck saw, "If you don't like it, leave", believe me, I'm looking. ![]() nb --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05 * Origin: e> (1:249/999) --- Synchronet 3.15b-Win32 NewsLink 1.92 SpaceSST BBS Usenet <> Fidonet Gateway |

Hell, I don't even know if we have the capability to build something like a motherboard in the USA. The only component likely to be built in the US are the hard drives. Perhaps I should try a non-American built drive cause those things don't last very long - I got a drawer of 'em to prove it. > > > >The "made in China" taint is no worse than the 50s "made in Japan" > >nonsense. My computer guy said they die because the HD gets too hot and blames the amount of space allowed for air circulation for it. He advised me against installing a hybrid HD for this computer because I'd have to upgrade so many other parts that I might as well buy a new one, so I'll let this (2T) HD die in 3-4 more years and just buy a new computer... with a hybrid HD. Or maybe I'll go completely SSD and keep everything on thumb drives. Haven't given that part much thought to tell you the truth. A piece of firewood big enough to do the job would be too heavy to move and take up too much working room. Jack stands are the way to go. --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05 * Origin: e> (1:249/999) --- Synchronet 3.15b-Win32 NewsLink 1.92 SpaceSST BBS Usenet <> Fidonet Gateway |

OTOH, the component that causes the most trouble in a desktop system is the powersupply. I bought my last desktop computer. It was an offer I could not refuse. It was a small, low-wattage, system. My other desktops have big processors that run at 95to 125 Watts. My new one runs around 7 to 9 Watts. With 4GB of RAM, 500GB HD, and Win 8, for $ 239 - what a deal! It even has a DVD burner. It's not so speedy but it'll work fast enough for the work I gotta do. > -- > A kitchen without a cook is just a room --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05 * Origin: e> (1:249/999) --- Synchronet 3.15b-Win32 NewsLink 1.92 SpaceSST BBS Usenet <> Fidonet Gateway |

I love my quad core processor and would get more cores if it's an affordable option the next time around! Speaking of DVD burner. Mine was dead (it died years ago after very little use), but I decided I wouldn't replace it and get a portable drive instead. That way I can use it on more than one computer. -- A kitchen without a cook is just a room --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05 * Origin: e> (1:249/999) --- Synchronet 3.15b-Win32 NewsLink 1.92 SpaceSST BBS Usenet <> Fidonet Gateway |

Nobody said they do not have an ethnic Chinese heritage, but the Taiwanese want their own independence and sovereignty. They do NOT want to be part of China or to be considered part of China by people like you. Are you going to try to tell us we're really English or Mexican or Spanish or French or Russian, depending on which country it is the USA either fought for and won Independence, bought or stole the part they live in from? -- A kitchen without a cook is just a room --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05 * Origin: e> (1:249/999) --- Synchronet 3.15b-Win32 NewsLink 1.92 SpaceSST BBS Usenet <> Fidonet Gateway |

Can they? It depends on what you mean by vote. http://www.fvap.gov/vao/vag/appendix/state-elections Puerto Rico can elect their own governor and participate in presidential primaries but not in the general election - being able to elect the president is a perk of being a state.
