Under new EU law, from the 01.01.2015, News.Individual.Net will no longer
sell services to anyone outside Germany.

I don't see anything in that link that says they won't offer services
outside of Germany. It's the same link I go to annually to renew my NIN
subscription.

Due to changes in European tax law coming into force on 01.01.2015, we can only offer our service to users which have their tax domicile in Germany.

I wonder if it applies to US citizens. I certainly have not received
any notice.

Well now, that sucks. (I did send them an email asking them to confirm.)

Any recommendations for another free Usenet server? Or should I move to
Germany...

Many years ago, I used NIN, and it was free at the time, then they
started charging a fee, which was inexpensive. We use NewsGuy and I am
happy with that.

NIN is pretty good about communicating changes. I sent them an email
asking for clarification.

The fee is worth it. Their support people are great. Got a problem or
a question? Very quick email replies with detailed answers written
clearly and concisely.

Becca, please tell me about NewsGuy? I use ES but have always kept up NIN
too because ES seems to blip from time to time.. I have only recently
renewed my subscription. All the time it was free eh, but I still thought
it was worth the tiny cost to keep it going.

You should move to Germany, and don't worry about having to give up your
favorite hobby of complaining about the food at the club, because there is
plenty of bad food in Germany.

According to this email just received from NIN:

"We'd certainly write an email to all affected customers if there were
going to be tangible changes. There are changes to European VAT
regulations which will make providing digital services to Europeans
unnecessarily bureaucratic. At NIN, we ask our users for an email
address to e.g. send a password to, and a name so we have a way to
address them. We don't need to know their residential address, social
security number, or tax domicile. And we'd like to keep it that way."

I bought a $10 account at Astraweb in 2005. It was for 10GB and I still
have 9GB left. That $10 will last me my whole life.

That's great, as long as it works out as described in their email. I'm
wondering what to use if the "forces of law" requires NIN to abandon those
who do not live in Germany. The sentence about "changes in European tax
law" certainly sounds like it could be a problem.

Mary, I went into my account and the option was there. Have a look and see

I think I am not being clear. I meant do you think I will be able to
continue after 2016?

Mary, I went into my account and the option was there. Have a look and see
what it says in your account.

Okay, thanks. I will do that.

Ahhh. I think you are probably right. See this:

Some one in another group reported this response on mailing NIN for
information:

"at news.individual.net, we don't collect information on a user's
residential address, tax domicile, social security number and so on. We
need an email address to get in touch and e.g. send a password to, and
we like to have a name so we know how to address or refer to people. And
we'd like to keep it that way.

The new European VAT regulations mean a lot more bureaucracy for
providers of digital services. We hope for a workable solution in the
medium term, and until then, try to keep providing our service as it
stands, as far as possible. If we should be forced to make more tangible
changes in the future, we would notify all affected users individually
via email."

Sorry this took so long. After we had Christmas dinner, George and I
took off to visit San Antonio for a couple of days.

You can choose whatever plan at NewsGuy that would suit your needs. It
is not very expensive.
