Squirts asked if invert syrup (as likely in his German sour cherries)
was as bad as HFCS. (Acid is applied to sucrose to split it into glucose
and fructose, thus "inverting" it.)

Trying to find out, I stumbled across a number of German books pointing out
the harm of sucrose. In English their titles would be "Pure. White. Deadly."

The book "Pure, White & Deadly" was published in England in the 60s. It
was controversial at the time (I remember a televised debate where the
author was a speaker) and was then ignored.
It has recently been "re-discovered".

AIUI a US scientist recently came to the same conclusion and did a
google search only to discover that book.

edition of Yudkin's book.

Many years ago, I read the book Sugar Blues, as I was finishing the
book, my firstborn asked me about it, so I gave it to him to read when I
finished it. He would not touch sugar after reading that book. I had no
idea that a book could impress a child that much, not that this was a
bad thing, but I thought twice before I recommended another book.
