I don't make it a habit of advertising who I filter. Sure, I have
identified a couple, but not all. One of them was the idiot Kuthe, who
decided to play net nanny and complained about a long OT thread and
started a running tally, responding to each new post and announcing his
now count. This sort of thing comes pretty close to the idiocy that he
demonstrated with that nonsense.

I agree that "public plonking is childish," but so is putting "LOL" after
a sentence that is not even marginally funny. Did you *really* laugh out
loud?

Would it not be easier if people just got out of the habit of quoting
100 lines of text and that adding less than a line of new text?

There might be little worth saving. Between the Bove rantings, the feuds between some of the guys, and the perennial caller ID type posts.........you get my drift.

I've been posting to another group where the mods were flagged and removed an interesting discussion. Want that to happen here? The poster had a lot of value to say in the group, but now feels hurt and will prob. fade away. The poster got a wee bit off topic and someone took offense.

Yes, they can, but they seldom do. Just look at the cesspool that is any
formerly popular and informative newsgroup, such as, say, ... RFC.

Public plonking is one form of peer pressure.

Peer pressure can be positive or negative. There are all sorts of
variations on subtle peer pressure. Responding to everything posted by
an narcissistic attention whore is one of them. It encourages the bad
behaviour.

Yeah. I'm not sure if it's lazyness or jes plain orneryness, but this
group has about the worst non-trimming problem I've run across. Oh
well, not a problem for me, anymore.

This newsgroup has been a "cesspool", continuously, ever since I found
it over 10 yrs ago. Whacked out evangelist doctors, ****** Limey
punks, screw-loose radicals, etc. This latest problem is merely the
new plague. Lazy assed posters, loveable trolls, and endless socks.
Nothing new.

I kid, I kid. I love unmoderated groups. It's all free speech baby!

I agree... but with free speech comes an implied responsibility. On
moderated groups, act irresponsibly and there are consequences. On
Usenet, there are no consequences other than peer pressure which really
isn't much.

Actually, this group is moderated by each individual. Some like me do
it by putting some posters in a kill-file or ignoring them. I can use
this group the way "I" want to use it to suit my own needs.

Kill-files are just a tool to help me separate the wheat from the chaff,
the good posters from the ones who don't add anything to my life.

It's a very small price to pay for free speech. As they say - "Freedom
isn't free!"

Even a small price is too much to pay when I am getting something I
don't want, like or need.

I saw this morning that there were over 150 posts to download but I only
got 104 of them... the rest were deleted. This newsgroup becomes more
valuable to me when I can eliminate 1/3 of the posts that are from
people I don't care to read.

There might have been a gem in the pile of posts that were deleted, but
the people who make their way into my kill-file generally post things
that are more like a lump of coal than a diamond

This group gets way too many postings! OTOH, most groups are moribund
and stagnating so I can't complain...

As Charlie Hebdo found out after mocking Mohammed and trying to pass
it off as satire.

Rest assured that if there was a gem hidden in what you deleted,
someone would have quoted it.

And unlike many others, there are still a lot of posters left here. Many
other forums are effectively dead.

Wouldn't it be easier just to killfile everything except the 3 or 4
prefered participants?
