I don't like lettuce generally but that has crunch

It's kind of like chewing on chlorophyll flavored ice. Maybe that's
why they call it iceberg lettuce.

Chlorophyll has no flavor of its own, what you're tasting is flavor
from other sources like mint.

Well, if she could discount it substantially below what her neighbors
are asking for their properties, she probably would find a buyer
fairly quickly. But the question is, would Jill want to and can she
afford to knock say 20-25% off its market value just to move it fast?

Also, if Jill plans to continue living in Florida, the odds are very
good that most other places she'd look at buying would also have HOAs.
So she'd still be charged fees for the upkeep of common areas, even if
it didn't include an amenity like a clubhouse.

If Jill hasn't any burning desire to pull stakes, it probably makes
sense to sit tight. But I don't feel any outrage over the club
assessment. It's just one of the things buyers into the community
agree to pay for. If you don't want to pay to support such things, you
have to find a development to reside in that hasn't got an HOA.

Or in her case, a golf club development with mandatory amount
residents need to spend at "the club". I like HOA's - unless the
Board of Directors are a bunch of petty dictators, which is what hers
appear to be.

No. And my house is not comparable to those on the market around me.
Those people have upgraded over the years. They don't have the original
1987 kitchen appliances, wallpaper, etc. I don't care about such things
because everything works and that's what is important.

When I did consider selling the realtor told me I'd have to spend a
fortune on "upgrades" to make it more attractive to buyers. I am not
willing to do that. Chances are whoever buys it would change everything
anyway. We don't all have the same taste; I happen to hate stainless
steel appliances. Nope, I'm not buying them for someone else.

I don't live in Florida, but I get what you're saying.

Evidently a lot of people like them but I'd never buy a house with an
HOA to tell me how to live. We got rid of King George and I'm not
replacing him with a board of directors.

I like that an HOA has rules and regulations. I don't want someone
moving in next door that has a huge RV or boat that they park in their
driveway. You might enjoy living on Tobacco Road, but I don't want
to.

I definitely agree with that. My neighborhood looks like a used car lot now.

Guy down the street from me seems to collect Opels. He has many in various

There's that to be said about it! There's actually a spot for RV
parking, you can't just plant one in your driveway. Boats belong in a
dry dock area or parked at the marina.

You can't just paint your house bright pink with purple trim, either.
When my parents first built this place there were only variations on
three shades of exterior house paint allowed. Redwood stain, brown or
dark green in keeping with the natural landscaping. They gradually
relaxed that rule but nothing outlandish is permitted.

The very nice neighborhood in Memphis TN where we lived when I was a
teenager looks horrible now. Not quite to the point of having broken
down appliances in the yard but almost...

I post the menus just for fun. Sometimes I catch them in outrageous
typos which gives everyone a chance to make fun of them.

When we moved out here were were torn between two different houses.
Thank goodness we chose this one. The other one ended up with a low
life living next door... dog houses, appliances, old cars on blocks
etc... The place two doors down is headed that way. It had been owned
by an old lady. She sold it to a couple who planned to tear it down and
build a super home further back. Their plans fell apart when the other
neighbours objected to it being too close to the property lines and not
in accordance with zoning bylaws. They then dumped on a redneck with a
collection of trucks, cars, trailers etc. Everything is parked on the
front lawn because the property is not wide enough to get around the
house. Thank goodness my old neighbour between us and them dealt with
the eyesore by planting lots of trees.

You can also move. Before I retired I lived urban and surburban... I
also lived in two different condos and one co-op... I hated all the
rulz and all the noise blaring 24/7, hated smelling everyone's cooking
too. I'm immeasurably happier living rural. Yeah, some people in
the sticks live like tobacco road but the properties are so large no
one sees their crap and the town zoning board does not permit anything
stored in front or along side the residence, everything has to be
behind the rear building line, and all vehicles (except agri) need to
be inside a closed building at night, can't park your car in your
driveway at night, and no parking on the road ever. Some people don't
mow a lawn, they don't have a lawn, they live on twenty+ acres way
back in the woods... only way you'd know anyone lives there is from
their long gravel driveway and rural mailbox on the road. I have lots
of neighbors but in winter I can only see two, in summer I can only
see one and that house is over 500 ft away. I can't see my neighbor's
house to the rear of my property unless I'm mowing my back field and
then I can just make out his house about a half mile away clear across
his 80 acre hay field, I see him at most twice a year if he happens to
be haying near the property line while I'm mowing my back field, then
we'll meet by the stone wall separating our properties and chat about
the weather for ten minutes while our diesels are idling, a real life
Robert Frost moment.

There is no front porch. The first house I spotted driving into the
neighborhood had broken mini-blinds hanging half off in the front
window. The house next door had a rusted out car sitting in the
driveway. It was very depressing.

When I moved in here 20 some years ago, it was a very nice neighborhood,
people kept their houses and yards up. Now, there are cars parked on lawns,
abandoned looking cars, broken windows in garage doors, trash cans left on
the sidewalks for days, etc. The people that have moved in through the years
have no respect for their property, all that's missing is goats in the front
yards. LOL

Sounds like where you live livestock in the front yard would be a
major improvement... most of my neighbors raise livestock, no problem
whatsoever. I couldn't care less about the fancy chickens in their
front yards, very pretty and big breasted. If you saw the gorgeous
estates here where they raise race horses you'd be mesmorized, you'd
be overjoyed to live in those spectacular stables. I heartell those
female caretakers give stallions BJs.

The downside, and it's a huge downside, is having YOU for a neighbor. I bet
none of them keep sheep for that very reason.

I think most of the people on this street do keep things up. But the guy
next door is still going construction so that's very annoying.

But where my mom used to live, they had trouble with the two neighbors at
the bottom of the street. One has a lot of issues as in probably not all
there mentally. Some of her adult children live there off and on but one
has serious medical issues and just isn't physically able to do any work.
My mom paid her gardener to go clean up the yard and the guy was very
thankful. His dad, long since deceased was a house painter. So while their
house always had fresh paint on it, it always had at least 6 different
colors of paint! He painted it very randomly as well. The mom hired
someone to put faux rocks on part of the house and that looked nice. But
then she took it upon herself to do the same to the rest of the house. And
she had no clue what she was doing. She just slapped them on randomly.
Eventually she did hire someone to put the job right but it looked horrid
for many years.

Across the street from them, that home owner died many years ago. His son
who is my age would come by about once a year to attempt to clean up the
property. But in the meantime, it looked crappier and crappier. The city
had to get involved twice because of rats. The fence fell over, the gutters
were just hanging, trees decayed and falling all over. Abandoned vehicles
in the back yard.

I could not understand why the son didn't try to sell the house. He does
have a brother so the only thing I can figure is that perhaps the house was
left to both of them and the brother refuses to sell. They didn't try to
rent it out either. I would suspect there had to have been a house payment
and perhaps there still is. And they have to pay property taxes.

I'm far from a navy person, not with only one four year hitch, with
most time spent in the galley. The only person on this planet who
could say she understood me was my mother and even she often had
doubts. I don't always understand me, I'm too complex, often my
thoughts surprise even me.
