Grillin' and chillin'. Yesterday I acquired a sadly neglected HUGE 6
burner gas grill. After a lot of elbow grease, it was ready for grilling on tonight. I cranked up 4 of the burners and made cedar planked salmon with squash kebabs https://flic.kr/p/rW3zVh and grilled romaine and scallions. https://flic.kr/p/rW3zSm The last few minutes I put some fresh dill on the plank but don't think it made any difference. https://flic.kr/p/rW2wnW I brought the salmon in, plank and all and placed it on a cutting board. My house still smells so nice from the cedar plank. Tomorrow I'll polish up the outside of the grill and it will be as good as new. koko -- Food is our common ground, a universal experience James Beard |

I have cedar planks, but haven't used them yet because truth be told - I can't stand the smell of cedar and I'm afraid it will ruin whatever I cook on it. Other than the cedar part, your meal sounds wonderful (planks come in other flavors and I'm not against the concept of planking fish). ![]() I've been wondering lately if you're still using that salt block and now I'm wondering if you'll use it on your grill. From what I've read, it will work. -- A kitchen without a cook is just a room. |

Planking fish was an old camp style of cooking for hikers, canoe trippers and fisherman. A cedar log is split and the fish fillet is nailed to it and then the log is set on end next to the fire. The moisture in the log stops it from catching fire prematurely. When the fish is cooked you toss the log into the fire. It saves washing a pan. |

How will anyone know, you didn't give even a slight glimpse of any part of that grill other than a piece of grate... after your intro I thought I was going to see the grill, all I saw are a few inconsequential viands.. you didn't even say what brand of grill. |

I mean, even wood or charcoal-broiling food is maybe not the healthiest thing on the planet, between ash and char, and it's not like cedar wood is edible either, as nice as it smells, isn't it a bit like basting with kerosene? I've only had it once or twice, and it hasn't killed me yet, but, well, ... I also have some relatives who like to barbeque/smoke all meat or at least whatever they serve when company comes over, and even though that tastes great I worry a little about that, too. I'd save the cedar for closets, the teak for boats, and burn the apple and mesquite wood in the barbeque but not in direct contact with food. J. |
