Cooking two dishes in oven at same time?

No, this is not a troll, just a simple question. Although I have been
doing a lot of cooking for a lot of years, still I have questions about
things I have never done. Usually if I make a roast in the oven I will
simply toss in some potatoes to bake, and I don't have to find room
for another baking dish.

For Easter, I made ham and scalloped potatoes. (My wife made asparagus
and salad.) The ham and pan took up the width of the oven, and I
hesitated to stick the pan of scalloped potatoes below the ham.

So as it happened I wrapped the ham in foil while I baked the pan
full of delicious cheesiness.

But could I have put the pan of potatoes underneath the ham so they
would have gotten done at the same time?

Sure. Sometimes the time changes a little with a larger mass in the
oven or the bottom rack may cook faster than the top, but you will see
what happens and learn to compensate for differences. Overall, it saves
time and energy.

Bread, pizza and cake will notice if you put something on the rack
beneath them, but a roast won't. The scalloped potatoes may get a
little browner on the bottom of the dish and be missing the browning
on the top.
