Still, if those are Canada geese, they really are a scourge on human-occupied areas
and airports. I guess they weren't told to stay in Canada.

Boron, that is how I see the Duggars. Now we have not only the original 19
Kids, but those kids are having weddings and babies. Pretty soon, TLC will

A lot of people have been complaining lately about the large numbers of
Canada geese and the population explosion. There was a pair nesting in
my neighbour's pond. Another neighbour down the road has several
nesting geese on his land and there are in a wetland across the road
from him and even more around the corner. There is a 20 nursery behind
our property and it is rare not to see several back there. Sometimes
there are hundreds of them. The local parks and beaches was swarming
with them and there is goose shit everywhere.

I haven't been able to locate any stats on the survival rates of the
clutches, but I see lots of geese around here every spring. Then I see
lots of little goslings. They grow quickly, but the flocks don't
increase in size fast enough to reflect the number of those newborns.
Apparently, those that make it to adulthood can live 20 years or more.

FWIW, pair that nested at my neighbours pond had only one gosling the
other day. I don't know what became of them. The young'un was too young
to fly away, but the parents have flown the coop.


Last year there were ducks nesting on the island in their pond. My
neighbour was monitoring the nest for about 25 days from the time he
found it. Right about the time he figured the eggs would be hatching we
had a wicked deluge and his pond overflowed. Later on he found the
bodies of several recently hatched ducklings.

and deposit potentially contaminated ( disease and parasites) droppings of 1-2 pounds every day.
The problem now is many of these birds no longer migrate. They find food and safety in inhabited
areas like residential neighborhoods with ponds and parks and riversides, andstay all year round.
They are a terrible nuisance where they decide to take up residence.

Resident goose populations nearly double in size every five years. Even so, they cannot be hunted.
It is a federal offense to harm them. Someone should have reported that lawn mower, if the story is
true.

You should check out the legislation. The Migratory Birds Act of 1918
does allow for regulations allowing of some of the species addressed in
the Act. I Googled hunting regulations for US states and had no trouble
finding hunting seasons for Canada Geese. For instance, Illinois had a
Canada Goose season from 10/18/2014 to 01/15/2015. North Carolina has a
season that excludes the fall migration time so that only resident geese
will be hunted.

Dave, why should I check regs? I said I didn't know a single hunter in Iowa who hunted
Canada geese. The regs don't apply to that statement.
