They may need to build massive desalinization plants on the California coast to supply water for human consumption or shut California down. Can you imagine "the water police" from the People's Republic of California timing your shower not to exceed two (2) minutes? William |

Desalination has emerged as a newly promising technology in California in the face of a record dry spell that has forced tough new conservation measures, depleted reservoirs and raised the costs of importing fresh water from elsewhere. But experts warn that converting seawater to drinking supplies remains an expensive, energy-intensive enterprise that has had mixed success in places like Australia and Florida. The biggest ocean desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere, a $1 billion project under construction since 2012 on a coastal lagoon in the California city of Carlsbad, is nearly completed and due to open in November, delivering up to 50 million gallons of water a day to San Diego County. That is enough to supply roughly 112,000 households, or about 10 percent of the county's drinking water needs, according to Poseidon Resources, the Connecticut-based company behind the facility. |

Bottom line, it is expensive and not a quick solution. If built, people will soon bitch about the cost on the water bill for both construction and operation. Probably some is needed, at least for emergency insurance, but is is not the 100% solution. |

I think a great deal of consumptive water could be saved if homes ran a gray water system, similar to what RVs do. One good 500 gallon cistern and some plumbing could make a real dent in usage. |

I can shower in 3! > Save water - Shower with a friend! Even three is luxurious. I can do it in less than a minute. It helps to have a hand held shower so you don't get a blast of cold water. I get into the tub and turn the water on hot and use the cold water to wet the soap and get lather up as the water is warming up. By the time I have hot water I am ready to rinse. |
