Default What Shut Down Your Garbage Disposall?

In think some of my tenants actually put gravel and chunks of concrete
down my disposall just for fun...more fun than watching tv! What were
you grinding when you shut it down? I have ground bones with warm
water running...did not stop my 1hp disposall

I had mine removed when it kept backing up. After he'd removed it, the guy found 3 Popsicle sticks in the drain - which was prob. the cause, but too late and I let it stay removed.

I figured the previous owner's 4 yr old hid the sticks there after being warned to not eat before supper or sumthin.

As I said previously, I strangled two garbage disposals to the point
of replacement because of pure ignorance, not malice. I learned that
artichoke leaves and rose stems are not disposal compatible. :/

i was never able to jam up any of the disposall brand disposalls, but
when renting we had some sort of never heard of dispose all and i was
able to completely jam it up with potato peelings one Thanksgiving.
Really ****ed off the landlord's handyman, but he fixed it.

Yikes sf! Those are super tough. I've whiffed on potato peels one time
- it can happen.

The key is to get the highest HP rating you can find.

I think mine was a hunk of metal. But not silverware. I just turned it on
and it started humming. After I could find no socket on the bottom to
turn, I turned to the internet, which recommended a broom stick.

I was able to stick it in and loosen the rotor, and it's worked ever
since.

When we lived in CA, I put the stems from some daisies down there. Oops!
And here, when one of my cats was a kitten, she put a nail brush down it. I
did pick out some chunks but one got really wedged in there. The plumber
even had trouble getting it out. Didn't help that it was clear plastic. We
had tiny rocks and dirt in there too. No clue how that happened.

Ah, potato peelings.

I once spent a memorable Valentine's Day in the crawlspace of
our previous house, helping my husband snake out the drains
that were plugged up from an excess of potato peelings down
the disposal. He operated the snake, and I shoved the buckets
of effluent out of the crawlspace. He really knows how to
treat a gal.

I've done that too with potato peels. After the first time getting
clogged, I now just put a few down at a time. I was able to unclog it
using a plunger.

I did it very badly with pear and apple peels when we first moved in here.
For a time I was able to force the clog up and bail it outside but
eventually the clog got deep in there. Not in the disposal but somewhere
further down.
