Default Seriously too hot for cooking!

We hit 100 here today. We never see that number this early on. Once in a
blue moon it might get close to that in Aug. but never now. My mom said she
heard someone saying that we are going to wind up with weather like San
Diego. If that is true, something has to change.

Got my hair cut the other day. Hairdresser has a shop at the side of her
unACed home. It's a newer home and quite fancy looking. She does have AC
in the shop and she has used it. But not that day. Client before her was
practically begging her to turn it on and she would not. Had my hair not
seriously needed a bang trim, I would have just left. It was miserable.

Today I saw people asking on Facebook if there were any churches with AC.
They got no response.

And I have come to realize that what I saw on a Food Truck show is true.
Owner said that there was no need for a bathroom. He sweated so much in
there that nothing came out the other end. Rather sickened me to hear it
but... I am making far less trips to the bathroom than usual and battling
dehydration something fierce. Only now do I not feel sick and headachy
because I *finally* got the new swamp cooler working. Apparently I had
overfilled it but there is no way to tell how much water is actually in
there. I am now just erring on the less side. This one won't get damaged
if the water runs out. It just won't cool. I blasted about a gallon of
water out of the beast in 3 hours last night and only managed to raise the
humidity to 43%.

Anyhoo... I am now resorting to Amazon Fresh for most of my food. Free
delivery for Prime until Sept. and saves me from having to go out in the
heat. Had to go out today and the heat was taxing my car's AC so much that
it didn't finally get cold until I got back home! And the stores that do
have AC don't necessarily have good units. I have been in stores that had
beastly hot spots in them on hot days.

Got 6 pounds of pot roast around 5:00 a.m. this morning, along with some
carrots, onions and a few other things that I needed. I actually used some
onions that I already had for the roast so I could prep them first. Put it
all in the Crockpot and it was ready by dinner time. One hour on high, 10
on low, 2 on "keep warm". I thickened the gravy a bit and have margarined,
whole wheat noodles with parsley on the side. I did get a small container
of prepared mashed potatoes from a restaurant from Amazon Fresh for my
husband because he likes potatoes with his roast and I can't eat them.

Normally I wouldn't want hot food in weather this hot but I haven't had pot
roast in a very long time and this is excellent! Only seasonings were salt,
pepper and parsley. Normally I would put in a bay leaf but I forgot. It's
still very good. Oh the onion is a seasoning as well, I guess. And I added
a little beef stock.

Really? We are routinely over 100 where I am and my AC works great in my
vehicle. Are you sure there isn't something wrong with yours? Did you have
it checked recently? If not, you might think about doing that.

It's barely over a year old. Shouldn't be anything wrong with it. I think
it was just because it was so hot inside to start with.

What cracks? I recall the same thing happening in my dad's car. There was
nothing wrong with the AC but we weren't moving. He said it would take a
while to get the air in from the outside. And he was right. Once we got
moving, it cooled off. I didn't drive very far but most of the time I was
stuck, stopped.

I don't think it was a coolant leak. I had that once in one of my old vans.
I kept telling my husband that something was wrong with the AC but he
wouldn't believe me until we got stuck in traffic near Travis AFB which is
in the CA desert. Then he believed me! It was blowing air and the air was
slightly cool but there was a leak in the line so most of the coolant wasn't
getting through.

This wasn't like that. Just took longer than normal to get really cold.

Yes. You will buy an air conditioner (or two) and figure out a way to
install it. You have many health issues and are often homebound. No
need for you to sit home suffering with broken swamp coolers all
summer long and living uncomfortably. It will only get worse as you
get older.

A business that has AC and refuses to turn it on when it's so hot? The
only reason to buy an
AC if for the very hot days like that. Time to find a new hairdresser.

And the hair salon has AC but refused to turn it on.
All this only in Bothell.

I've had those high temps for over a month now. Nothing wrong with my
ac and all store's ac works fine too. A car's AC will come on and
continue to cool in 93-100 temps unless something serious is broken.

Julie, get your car's ac checked. You are spouting nonsense here and
it seems to be just to support why you think it's a waste of money to
buy an air conditioner. Get real.

You could have purchased 2 small air conditioners for the price you
paid for the NEW swamp cooler that doesn't even work right. And why
doesn't last year's new swamp cooler work?

I live in the South and it gets hot and stays way hot all summer long
vs your few hot days. Our air conditioners keep us comfortable all
summer long. Expensive but comfortible. Your complaints along with why
nothing works near Seattle is so lame.

Sorry to pick on you but this AC nonsense is just that....nonsense.

Had you (and maybe others) walked out, she would get the hint in the
future. AC as for the comfort of customers as well as the workers.
Being cheap does not always pay off.

People often go to the movies when hot, or the mall.

I still don't get the swamp cooler thing. 43% humidity is the maximum I
want to see in the heat. A portable AC can be installed in any room
with any window and it actually removes the heat to the outside and
reduced humidity to a comfortable level. A properly sized AC will get
the temperature down at least 20 degrees below outside, maybe more. Our
bedroom is 70, the rest of the house is about 73.

Not enough info. It does take a few minutes to really get cool in a car
that has been in the sun for a while. Inside can easily be 130 degrees.

Open windows to get the hot air out and start driving. Once the cook
air is blowing, close the windows, but keep it on a fresh air setting.
If it is 120 in the car and 100 out of the car, you will want to cool
that 100 degree air to replace the 120 degree. You can change it to
recirculate one the start to get cooler.

The color of the car can make a huge difference. Dark colors can be 20
degrees or more hotter than a light color. Las Vegas area is loaded
with white cars. Some cars, at idle, barely put out the cooling needed
to stay comfortable.

A short tip to the store in a very hot car in traffic will be
uncomfortable. Five minutes at 40 mph or higher speeds cooling
considerably.

Could be. Gotta power down the windows and drive for a couple of blocks or
so before turning it on. :-)

One easy check is to look for a doo-hicky that looks like a propane
bottle with two pipes coming out of it. That's the receiver-dryer. If
there's some condensation coming off of it or if it's cold, your
refrigerant might be low. If your AC compressor turns on and off several
times in a minute, your refrigerant might be to low.

Why wait to turn it on? It takes a few minutes to circulate the
refrigerant to blow cold air. Meantime, the hot air is going out the
windows. Mine goes on as soon as I start the car. In the case of hot
weather like today, I'm going to start the car with the remote and let
the AC run a few minutes before I go out.

Again, confused. Doesn't matter what I could have purchased. If I have no
place to put them, then they wouldn't be usable. Right? I am not going to
get into this here once again. I am sick of repeating myself.

Yeah, well... I *don't* live in the South and our normal high temp. for
this time of year is 75. Hardly enough to warrant AC. Clearly our climate
is changing.

I never said that AC doesn't work here. I said most people don't have it
because in the past, it normally wasn't needed.

I didn't do that. I never do that. I hate having the windows down when it

I normally get in, leave the doors open are at least the front windows and
let it run in my driveway for a few minutes but I didn't have time to do
that yesterday. I had to get somewhere in a hurry. I don't roll the back
windows down because they aren't automatic.

I'm sure there's no problem with it. It did get cold. It just took longer
than normal to get that way.

One AC wouldn't do much. Neither would two. If our weather does continue
to stay like this, I will look into something. I don't know what. Right
now my priority is getting the house painted and then getting a new deck.
The dry weather has dried the wood out so much that the nails are popping
out right and left and boards are falling off. I knew that it needed to be
replaced but now it's getting to be a hazard.

I also know that I'm not the only one in this situation. I know three
people who have AC here. A friend, my mom and my bro. Bro rarely uses his.
Mom has no choice. She's in an apartment and it comes with. Friend got a
super good deal on a portable unit where her husband works. She doesn't use
it often. AC is still not common here.

You just don't get it Gary. My prior hairdresser and the one prior to that
had *no* AC. It is just not that common here. Anywhere.

Harris Ford doesn't have it either in the repair dept. I cringed when I got
the recall notice for my car but, they don't have the parts now and said
they would only do something about the problem (which is that the car could
just stop and not restart) unless I am actually having the problem.
Otherwise I have to wait until they can figure out what to do and make the
parts. They do have AC in the building where they sell parts.

Most little stores have no AC and probably half of the restaurants don't.
Our cooling centers are the libraries.

You don't get it because you don't live here. You live in an area where it
is normally hot. It's not normally hot here at all.

And as I said, the car's AC did come on. It just took longer to get icy
cold than usual.

Yes, but I don't know where else I would have gone. I am thinking back to
all of the other salons I have been to in the past and none had *any* AC.

The mall isn't particually cool with all of the skylights and the theater
doesn't always put on the AC. We did try the movies a week ago but the
movie that we went to (Ted 2) was so disgusting, we walked out.

They can not be easily installed in *these* windows. We've been through
this before. They are very large, very tall, sliding ones. And now they can
not be installed at all after I had Mr. Handyman put the hardware cloth over
all of them. That is necessary for the cats.

My car is black with a partially black interior. Angela's car is green with
a beige interior. Husband's car is silver with a beige interior but in
vinyl. He and I park our cars in the driveway. Both will be hot on a hot
day when we get inside. Angela parks on the street shaded by trees. It
will be cool when we get inside.

The AC in my car did work. I had to just get in it and go. I had the
windows down for a few seconds before I drove off. I also know that a car
only sitting and idling will not stay cool for long, especially if it is hot
inside. I learned this sitting in parking lots waiting for my kid. Once
you start driving it around, it will cool off.

On TV last week: Statistically, 30% of homes in the Northwest do not
have A/C

You didn't know anything about the movie before you went? There were
a lot of big movies to choose from last week.

That would not be true for this area.

http://www.city-data.com/forum/seatt...ow-common.html

https://answers.yahoo.com/question/i...1225620AAOJgOu

http://seattlebubble.com/blog/2014/0...ing-heat-pump/

Keep in mind that the Northwest also includes places like Eastern Washington
where it does get hot and AC is very much needed. If you don't live here,
you have no idea how it is.

I don't like most movies. Wouldn't have mattered which one it was.
Daughter wanted to see this. I had attempted to watch the first Ted on TV
but it didn't appeal at all so only was on for a minute if that. All I knew
was that it was rated "R" and there was a teddy bear in it. I had no clue
that the jokes it contained were aimed at a certain kind of gamer or perhaps
an immature teenaged boy. Mostly I use movies as a place to take a nap. I
couldn't do that with this one. I wasn't able to relax.

That bear would look at you two and tell your daughter that she is a
repulsive fat ****, and that she should kill her mother for allowing her
to become that way.

Actually, Ed, in my house a window (and certainly a portable) AC unit
would require special fitting for the type of verticle windows I have.
There's no easy venting to the outdoors. The screens in my house cannot
be removed because they are attached to the sensors for the security
system. I sincerely doubt she has that issue.

But hey, it was emergency! She needed her bangs trimmed! Yep, that's
critical. Then she went to a place where the owner refused to turn on
the AC despite all the paying customers complaining. Uh huh.
