Default Spam question...

For those of you here that like spam. I do occasionally. I'll eat a
can maybe 2-3 times a year. I've never cooked it or used it in a
recipe. For me it's just sliced spam on white bread with mayo. Just
a sandwich or two with salty chips. It's a nice snack.

I noticed this morning that they offer other spam options. Turkey
Spam, Jalapeno Spam and Teriyaki Spam.

Just wondering - has any spam likers here ever tried these other
flavors? What's your opinion of them. I think I did try the turkey
one years ago but I forget my opinion. Obviously, it didn't impress me
too much.

I use some and keep it on hand for hurricane supplies. Honestly the
original is best. Next up is the lower sodium which works well.

We do a can a year here but when we do one, we go Hawaiian (spam and
long rice and so on). The same can also has enough to chop for bits in
a macararoni salad and some other things.

Default Spam question...

When I was a young wife on a budget, we had Spam about twice a month...but
I fried it, and after browning the first side and turning it over, I put a bit of crushed
pineapple and brown sugar on it while the second side browned. It is really
pretty tasty. I haven't tried any other flavors, and I haven't had any in decades.
No particular reason for that....

I don't care much for the flavored types, the Teriyaki is just awful, don't
like the Turkey either, and haven't tried the Jalapeno since I'm not a big
fan of Jalapeno anything. I like to fry regular Spam, and have it with eggs
etc. I do like Spam sandwiches pretty much like you.

The bacon flavor Spam is pretty good. You can cut it thin and fry it
crisp like bacon. The chorizo flavor ain't too bad - if you like cumin
flavored Spam. I'll have to try the Portuguese sausage Spam. These are
great times for Spam lovers. They ought to make some kim chee and
pineapple flavors.

Those are both excellent suggestions!

I'm back to frying a slice now and then for breakfast - all YOUR fault
btw, and thank you very much!

I had some sushi yesterday. The place had Spam and egg, wrapped up in
nori, rolled into a maki sushi, dipped in tempura batter and then deep
fried. Odd bodkins!

I've tried all the Spams, didn't like any of them, not even the low
salt one... I only like the original Spam. I've noticed the original
Spam is not always available, mostly the stores carry only the low
salt version, but I refuse to buy it. I like Spam all different ways,
very good fried with eggs and potatoes, but mostly I eat it sliced in
sandwiches but with mustard, for some reason I don't like Spam with
mayo.... Spam with mayo is like tube steak with mayo, not good,
actually repulsive.

We usually get the low sodium and fry it for breakfast, occasionally for
sandwiches. Tried the hickory smoke and it was ok, but not something to
go out of the way for.

Same here with the flavored, and I don't like the low sodium, so just
original Spam for me too.

I haven't had spam for something like 50 years, probably more. I intend
to keep up the "distance"! ;-)

Heck, after 50 years, you might actually like it as a novelty meat
product. That's how I consider it. They have the pull tabs now to
open. No longer winding that key around the can.

Shel, I think it is the state food of Hawaii...much loved there because so much was
supplied there during WWII.

That was my thought too. My main store only carries a few kinds. I
didn't even know they sold spam with bacon. oh man....everything is
better with bacon, imo. I'll shop elsewhere to see if I can find
that.

On the same note, I like scrapple occasionally. Rapa makes it with
bacon added but my store only sells the original. The Rapa with bacon
is so much better. I'm thinking the Spam with bacon would be much
better too.

What do you think about the Spam with bacon.
I would think that should be the best other than original.

> You should be pan frying all your SPAMS except for the original.

I'll keep that in mind. I was going to buy the low sodium this morning
but they were out...evidently a popular kind. Last time I bought the
original, I noticed just how salty it tasted.

Anyway, thanks Steve for you input and to all others that responded
too.

PS-no bacon or low-sodium SPAM this morning so I bought a little can
of Armour potted meat. From what I remember, that's pretty heavily
salted too but will work on a sandwich with swiss cheese.

It would be very novel for me to be seen eating spam.

Yep, remember those keys. Insert the tab into the key and wind. As a
kid, I loved getting to open the can. Eating the spam, that was another
matter entirely! A lot of things changed when I moved out of home. The
most important one being that I didn't have to eat what I didn't like.

I do recall liking corned beef from a can similar to a spam can.
Probably been as long since I've had that as well.

I can't eat that now, it is too salty for me.

Our pantry has none. I haven't even looked to see if supermarkets here
still sell spam. Must check next time I'm shopping. The online catalogs
show nothing in the way of spam at our major supermarkets. Seems I'm not
alone in my view of spam! ;-)

The low sodium is 25% less salt of a salty food so I don't feel it's
worth it not to enjoy the product, the low sodium just doesn't taste
right. Their Lite verion is also 25% less sodium but contains 50%
less fat, it's a disgusting product, smells weird and the texture
looks like Kennel Ration, it won't slice, just falls apart like pet
food. I'll stay with the original and when I want versions I make my
own by the recipe I use... diced Spam sauted with onions and bell
peppers is very good as is, over rice/pasta, or as an omelet, even
with Velveeta. I like Velveeta, I like Cheez Whiz too. American
cheeze is also good for a Spam Cheeseburger. I like many kinds of
cheese but I detest cheddar, the taste gives me the willys/shivers.

D will eat it but ... all that salt. I doubt it is more than it used to be,
but I guess I don't use as much as I used to.

Interesting that you dislike cheddar and also bacon.
Those two are normally the most popular of foods.

I love bacon and most things that include it.
I also love cheddar cheese....the sharper the better.
I also like swiss very much.

I like Swiss cheese but I like Jarlsberg better.
It's the odor of bacon cooking that I don't like, always smells
artificial, the smokey odor is far more potent than the smokey taste.
I don't care much for smoked meats but I like smoked cheeses and I
love smoked fish... yesterday was a real treat, was visiting day at
the sleep over summer camp the grand attended. They put out quite a
spread, included all the best smoked fish from a NYC appy, I made a
pig of myself with smoked whitefish. A wonderful camp:

I don't believe that to be the case. If there was a state meat, it would probably be ahi. We eat a lot of ahi. I guess our state animal should be parasitic worms. Our state disease, of course, would be mercury poisoning.
