I can't remember now who bought them out. Some recently became Haggen and some became County Market. Still, apparently too soon to tell if they will be better. So far still at the stage of having mostly the same merchandise but less selection and higher prices. One is going to be PCC which is a local chain, similar to Whole Foods but smaller and IMO, better. The other? I was told that it would be the new, lower priced, smaller Whole Foods but some are holding out hope for Trader Joe's. Still others are saying we will get both when they knock down the tiny strip mall behind there. What will become of the seemingly striving cake decorating store is beyond me. At any rate, because of all this nonsense going on, nobody seems to know which end is up. At the one Safeway, they didn't even tell customers that they were closing. I only read about it on Facebook and got there on the last day of business. Somebody wrongly posted that the whole store was 80% off. It wasn't, although a few things were. I wound up buying a few things I wouldn't normally buy, just became they were cheap. Like a cake mix and some key lime juice. Word is that they are building a new, larger Safeway up the street by the Lowe's and the giant church. If this is the case, then I imagine they will also close the small, old Silverlake one. Neither of those two locations seemed to do much business and there seemed to be a lot of shoplifters and other crimes at Silverlake. So while you might have one or two stores that are stable, what we have here is a big old mess! I will be going to QFC later because they are the store with the big soda sale so I will look there. I don't go there often because of the high prices, or Winco because of the distance. Target doesn't sell the little cans and neither do the organic type stores. |

My one pear tree produced nothing this year. The other has a ton but I suspect that by harvest time, the fruit will not be edible due to the drought. I did water it a couple of times but we are now facing extreme water restrictions to the point where they may be shutting it off entirely for a few hours each day. We just broke another record for heat. The most days in a row past 90 degrees, And still no end in sight. I do think I am adjusting to the heat now. It's 76 in the house and I feel chilly. |

Holy crow! I think she's on to something, my store had no small cans of pears!! Of course, they had almost no small cans of fruit at all. I guess it's not a pear conspiracy after all. My store just hates small fruit cans. nancy |

Take the piece of paper to the customer service desk at Winco. Request that they stock the item for you,. I usually get what I want in 2 days, only once did it take longer. The person behind the desk will pass your note to the person who does the ordering for the canned fruit section. I have never had them refuse a request from me. Don't ask a clerk at the checkout or in the aisle. They have nothing to do with stock maintenance. Janet US |

It's always worked for me, since I know the request will be funneled to those that can actually do something about it and not to the "dead air" on the floor. -- jinx the minx |

Diced canned pears aren't even worth eating, they have pitifully little food value other than sugar... the halves can at least be used for presentation, and there aren't many halves in a larger can. Any *normal brained* person would before buying those tiny cans of diced water packed pears would simply buy a fresh pear.... fresh pears still need to ripen but they all won't ripen at the same time so by picking a few at various levels of ripeness they can sit for a couple three weeks and still be good, and fresh pears cost less and there are more varieties, and no can to dispose of. |

She has special problems in the stores she deals with. There was the store where the birds were always getting into the bread on the lower shelves, the problem with buying moldy. One of the more serious hazards was the woman with the mop who was staking her. It is a very special world that she lives in. |

Not enough sun, warmth, too much maple sugar? Just curious... |

Queue Alfred Hitchcock. ![]() I have actually seen the occasional bird flying around in grocery stores. They come in when the delivery bay doors are open. They're usually sparrows. > the problem with buying moldy. I don't get it. I actually look at food when I'm buying it. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've gotten home with something and discovered it was spoiled. I immediately took it back to the store, went to the customer service desk and got my money back. > One of the more serious hazards was the woman with the mop who was staking > her.
