Default Diablo peppers

Walking around yesterday (in the north SF bay area), I came across some
really nice looking pepper plants in a front yard -- probably at least
four feet high. The peppers were maybe 2 1/2 inches long, thin like
cayenne or tabasco peppers, with the pointy end up (stem down), and all
the fruit were completely black.

Just then, the homeowner came outside, so I asked him what kind of
peppers they were. "Diablo".

Well, I love peppers, so when I got home I googled for diablo pepper.
The descriptions and photos all showed red, not black, fruit, which was
hanging pointy end down.

So what kind of pepper did this guy have in his front yard? Clearly they
were being grown for culinary, not decorative, purposes.

FWIW, I have a strong suspicion that the homeowner's first language was
Spanish, not English -- not that this matters in any way except that
there may have been an error in translation.

He was probably just trying to tell you they were hot. Did you take a
picture of the peppers with your phone camera? It could aide you in a
search. Go to Google Image and enter "black chile pepper", there are
quite a few choices - only you will be able to decide what it was you
saw.

If he's Mexican, it might be a Mayan Black Chili Pepper - but you'd
have to google an image to be sure. You could also look up

chilaca chile
Chilhuacle Negro
Cascabel

From what I've read, they go from green to brown to black. If none of
the above work out, go to scoville sites and "find" chiles with black
or negro in their name to Google Image.

For the record, I never once even considered sleeping with you. And
you know that. You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was
going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the
total blue.

After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3
years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of
romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY
MOVING IN WITH YOU?

That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the
screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too
spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands
down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least
he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar
at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2
years.

Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why
your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation
and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd
prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo.

And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bullshit and visions of
grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done
in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people
about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as
if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're
manic depressive mixed with habitual liar.

Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles.

We have Thai versions and they are black before they ripen to a red
colour. They start out green, change to a black, finally to a nice red
colour. Did I say the were damn hot?

Since there were four plants in a row in the middle of the front yard,
all four feet tall, and all in those round wire "tomato cages",
ornamental seems a bit dubious.

No photo, but I did search on black chile pepper, but nothing remotely
similar showed up.

Well, that looks promising. *Some* of the photos showed peppers very
similar to what I saw. I will check out local sources for Mayan Blacks
(the guy said his wife had gotten them in Sebastopol (CA) which is not
far from here.

Thanks.

Look these up in Google Images and see what you think about these two:

Black Cobra aka Goat's Weed. Upright, originally from Venezuela. This
ripens from green to black to red. The stems and undersides of the
leaves are fuzzy. Hot, but probably less than a Habanero.

Ot Hiem (Vietnam) aka Devil Pepper or Mean Pepper. Upright, but not
particularly skinny. Mentioned mostly because of the word "Devil" plus,
it's claimed to be pretty spicy.

Also note that the botanical name for both and hundreds of others is
"Capsicum annuum". Since they are the same species, I would expect them
to freely hybridize and cross-breed with other chiles. You might be
looking at a one-of-a-kind cross-breed.

How pretty! Did it take all summer for them to get to that height and
bloom? I don't recall seeing plants or seeds for the decorative that
grew that tall. A little more info please.

The Black Cobra is a pretty good match; the Ot Hiem, not so much.

If you reckon the black cobra is the one, then it's definitely the one
we have and the black is a transition stage in its ripening to a red
colour. We have a bunch of plants in the garden but it's Winter now so
no chillies (peppers) to speak of therefore I can't nip out and snap a
photo of one for you. .

Not here. Not high enough and a tad too close to the moderating effects
of the sea. We are about 5 kilometres from the beach and on a ridge
between two valleys so we only get down to 6C or 7C overnight with the
odd foray down to 3 or 3.

It has been quite mild this year apart from a couple of cold snaps. I
found it to be colder in Brisbane than here.

We are getting a few but they look a little scraggly. Might have to bump
them along with a bit of nitrogen rich fertilizer.
