I was walking to my room at around 9 evening. There was a girl outside
of her room in a bikini waiting. My door was next to hers and it looked
like she was greeting me. I smiled but she was looking at the guy that
was walking behind me. It was a young, nervous-looking, kid with a well
worn backpack.

Thank God my son wasn't with me to witness this awful enterprise
happening in the next room. He probably would have asked me if I had a
hundred bucks or so...

I was talking to a classmate of mine at Kailua high school. He knew all
about the criminal doings in my sleepy hometown. I had no idea. The
network of druggies where we live now is quite remarkable. Everybody in
the network knows how it's all going down. In their world, things happen
and situations change in a flash. They were able to help us when the
cops did nothing. It's just like in the ****in' movies! Mostly, it's a
world we try to stay away from.

What a great series of articles, I suppose it's not unfair to say that
as Sinatra was to Vegas, so was Do Ho to Hawaii.

I had not considered the Yakuza influence, but it certainly makes
perfect sense.

Ah the underbelly of paradise, Yakuza, corrupt singers, hookers and Vog.

What a simmering rock you live on!

As I've mentioned many times, I always get up before the sun. The
first thing I do is make a cup of coffee then check out emails and rfc
while enjoying the coffee. Or sometimes sit out on the back porch
enjoying the early morning with coffee. Just the one cup is enough
for me most times. Then I go to work 1-2 (or even 3) hours later.
Everyone goes in the store to buy their morning coffee but I don't.

Them: "Don't you want any coffee, Gary?"

Me: "Yeah but I finished mine 2 hours ago, you slackers!" ;-D

I can't remember the last time I bought a cup of coffee but it had to
be some 20 years ago, I brew my own at home or when I did a lot of
traveling there wasn't yet in room coffee so I traveled with my own
plastic electric percolator, a four cupper that really only made two
mugsful, I still have it packed in my backpack traveling kitchen
kit... contains everything I need to prepare most any gourmet meal,
even includes a small (15" diam.) three legged charcoal grill
purchased many years ago at a John's Bargain Store for $1.98, the legs
are removeable and fit inside the grill, pretty sturdy for $1.98... I
too have never been inside a Starbucks... I don't call what they serve
coffee, all I've heard about are coffee flavored sweet/fatty high
caloric concoctions (hot milk shake/frappé).

Cowboy coffee is boiled too, to no great loss of flavor.

You can get straight(black )coffee too.

In Europe, coffee is essentially espresso – which, in America, isn’t
very much coffee. To create a caffè americano – a coffee that satisfies
the American preference for more sips in every cup – Europeans simply
add hot water to their espresso. While the americano is similar in
strength and taste to American-style brewed coffee, there are subtle
differences achieved by pulling a fresh shot of espresso for the
beverage base. The best way to discover these nuances, of course, is to
try a cup yourself.

DID YOU KNOW

Whereas water is added to espresso after it’s been extracted in a caffè
americano, a lungo, or long espresso, is made by passing more water
through the espresso machine.

You can get a plain cup of coffee at Starbuck's. People talk about
the frappalappacappucino; there's nothing to say about a plain
cuppa joe from Starbuck's (except that it's roasted too damned much).

My husband likes frappalappacappucino (with extra frappa), but
we usually aim for Panera.

What I really dislike about Starbucks is that they don't seem
to have fresh milk. UHT boxed milk tastes foul to me.

I don't do milk in my cup, I'm double shot expresso person, but that
boxed product would be an unfortunate choice for sure.

I also agree some of their roasts are burnt tasting.

But they have a lot of choices so one can choose accordingly.

They're pricey though, more so than Dunkin.

Turkish coffee too. It isn't exactly boiled. The way I understand
the process is it's taken off the fire just before comes to a boil.

Good recollection.

I never had a problem with proper percolated coffee either.

Some folks are just fussy.

Actually, I was talking about milk for drinking. Sometimes we go
to Charbucks and I don't feel like coffee, so I'd like milk.

Ok, hadn't considered that.

Convenience however rules, same as in McDs.

Me either, but a local (Arab) coffee vendor taught me how and I never
let it sit for hours warming on the stove.

The people who think Starbucks is over roasted (Charbucks) are the
reason so much coffee tastes like dirty dishwater to me. I only buy
dark roast. Light roast is for people who should be drinking tea or
hot chocolate and medium roast is for coffee wimps.

There's the rub all right.

You want to make it fresh and consume when so.

I tend to like a slightly less strong variety for my expresso (at home),
but the real taste difference comes when comparing their basic black
against Dunkin's.

The Dunkin coffee has a far more balanced and drinkable body, but that's
to my tastes.

I also enjoy a good strong cowboy coffee with a nice dose of turbinado
sugar, so my tastes do run the gamut.

I am just happy to not have tasted Sanka or Nescafe in decades.
