Thanks! I thought Dyson had been to court with Hoover and
had won.

Easy to know the winner without going to court; in 1960 the high
school boys said "She sucks like a Hoover"... in 2015 the high school
boys tweet "She sucks like a Dyson". Ladies and gentlemen I rest my
case. LOL-LOL

Yikes. Then call the carpet cleaners. What a mess.

I'm glad you had great luck with your machine, and you hear all
the time how happy people are with them. I thought maybe because
I'd bought a canister that I wasn't wowed by it. I had an
experience like yours when I replaced it with a power head
vacuum. No, not three canisters of dog hair or otherwise. (laugh)
Just a lot of stuff came up.

I don't think my Dyson was performing up to snuff for a while.
And when you pay that much for a machine, you do expect to be
impressed.

I did hesitate to mention that I didn't have a great experience
because I know people do love them, but I did want to say that
the refurbished machines are not there for sale just because
someone didn't know how to use it, or opened the box and returned
it. They aren't infallible.

.....and are not likely to bad-mouth a product one foolishly spent so much
money on.

The proof is is the pudding. How many used Dysons does one see in a
typical used vacuum cleaner shop. I've never seen a one.

Ever since I rescued a commercial grade Hoover from a dumpster and
repaired it by replacing a then $5 beater brush belt, I've never
seen the advantage of these new gen bagless vacuums. My daughter
seems to go thru them at an astonishing rate. About 1 per yr. At one
time she had 3 dead one's and was looking for a 4th.

Me? I'm still using a Kenmore canister vac w/ pwr head. Sucker must
be at least 30 yrs old, yet I can still get parts. Also have a
working Kirby. They may not be the best for vacuuming dirt, but they
DO last. The one I have must be at least 35 yrs old and works jes
fine.

But you fail to tell what brand of bagless vacuums your daughter
seems to have bad luck/tears up. Either she's buying junk from
the get go or she's very abusive with them.

Yet everyone raves about them. Hey, it wasn't that much, but
probably $100 more than I generally spend.

I was rather hoping it would be more reliable for the extra
dough. That doesn't always pan out.

I really don't spend any time whatsoever in a used vacuum shop.

Just for giggles I searched and the first article to pop up was,
ta da! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3688983.stm

That could well be true, I hate the bags so much I guess I'm
willing to shell out for a new machine every two three years.

Knock wood this one is still going strong. It's been my favorite
so far.

Now, from what I've heard, the price of those makes my little
Dyson look cheap.

Except for that Not best for vacuuming dirt part.

Mine is an upright, not a canister. If I were to buy a canister, it
would definitely need to be one with a powered head.

Great analogy.

It's like a Bentley we can all afford!

I have a built in system with a 2hp motor and canister in the basement.
I want to get a decent hand vac for those small spills when it's too
much trouble to drag out the 30' hose. I looked at the Dyson stickvac
and it struck me that it is a handvac with an extension tube. Could one
also use the stickvac without the tube as a handvac?

I think one can get the stick with attachments. Not sure, as I use the
small one I already have, but you are correct - the motor heads are
the same.
