Default Haggen problems!

When there was that big merge of the Albertsons and Safeway, some of the
stores were converted to Haggen. They have now filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy
and apparently all sorts of problems. I didn't put up any links because
there are so many. Layoffs, closures, and claims of them overcharging
customers. They also apparently owe money to employees and suppliers. Not
good.

I guess it was a bad move to expand the way they did. Everyone wants a
piece of the pie but the pie is only so big. Customers vote with their
dollars.

They just took over 2 or 3 Von's, I believe they were, as a similar
merging/purging thing in OC, CA. The wife and I strolled through one
of them, recently converted. It was a total morgue. I saw maybe 2
other people. One checker who stood with us and chatted for 5 minutes
or so.

Two weeks later I hear they've file for bankuptcy--I am still not even
sure how to pronounce their name!

Yep. I think I've been in there twice. Once was to use a coupon that gave
me some dollar amount off if I spent so much. Even at that, there were no
savings. I had a really hard time finding enough to buy to get me up to
that amount. And it wasn't even food that I bought. I think it was some
sort of cosmetics.

I went the next time just to buy one thing. I had to stop in at the dance
studio for recital tickets and was on my way from Winco from there. But I
also had stuff to put in the food bank donation bin. I can't even remember
what it was that I bought that day. Their sale prices aren't even enough to
get me in there. Now I suppose if I were still going to the dance studio
all the time, I might buy a few things. But I have no need to go there now
and none are convenient to me.

I grew up with one near me. Only complaint I can remember besides the
prices was that they used to use peanut slices soaked in almond flavoring on
their baked goods. I doubt that they are still doing that now but they did
do it when I was a kid. They were within walking distance of our house so
that's where my mom sent us if we needed one or two things. But we rarely
ever did a big grocery shop there.

The ones I have been in recently were disappointing as was County Market.
Far less selection and insanely high prices. I saw nothing there at all
that I couldn't buy elsewhere. I think stores like Whole Foods can get away
with the higher prices because they do sell unique things. They know that
someone like me who is going there just to by Choco Higos might also pick up
a couple of apples or onions or whatever else might be on my list. I still
would never do a full grocery shop there, but if I do have a few other
things that I need then I will usually just pick them up there instead of
going to yet another store.

Big swaths of Tustin, CA suddenly have no supermarkets at all! I'm
eager to go over there and see if they've just shuttered them or what.

Wow! That is always one thing that I look for when I am in an area that is
unfamiliar to me. Where do they shop?

Oh, two or three extra miles one way or the other. Orange County is a
pretty dense area, so it's not like they have to go far. Still,
location has always been a considerable salespoint of any grocery store.

It sounds like Safeway's bad practices team was sent over to Haggen
because I've been very happy with the local Safeway stores that
retained the Safeway name.

It is sometimes hard to tell how things will go. I had a Mazda van and
liked it so much that we got a Mazda for my wife. When the time came to
buy a new car I was keen to get another Mazda, but I learned that For
had bought into Mazda. I had to wonder if Mazda had passed on its good
practices to Ford or if Ford was going to drag Mazda down to its level.
After my experiences with Ford I was not going to take a chance.

Kirkland is close enough to Bothel. I'll FB someone who lives there

I don't recall any problems with the ones in CA when I lived there. But
ours here are not good.

What does Kirkland have to do with it? I have been there a few times since
we moved back. It is certainly not close enough for me to go grocery
shopping there. So whatever they have in Kirkland is rather meaningless to
me.

True enough. Quality of any store is very location specific.

Yes. I did look to see online reviews. There are some for one Safeway. I
don't know if they have more than one in Kirkland. Very mixed reviews.
Complaints of things being out of stock, bad produce and clueless employees.
Which is kind of how the ones are here. But then other people liked them.
I guess it depends on what you are looking for in a store.

They are in the same general area close enough to have the same
corporate management. I don't think she knows from up about Safeway's
old reputation. There's quality and then there's the other stuff like
not ringing up the stated marked down price aka overcharging. I've
never had a problem with quality at Safeway but they were famous for
playing monkey shines with the numbers.

That doesn't mean anything. When I worked for K Mart, the stores in this
area had the same corporate management and yet they were all different.

Store managers don't program the system.

Julie, it's obvious that you have zero clue what I'm talking about.
Either you've never shopped at Safeway or you were totally oblivious
to what they did and their well deserved reputation in that area. It
doesn't matter anymore because the entire chain is under new corporate
management, so time will tell if it's more of the same or not.

I shopped at Safeway in CA, WA, Canada and probably some other states.

The part that I don't understand is "program the system". Are you talking
about the computer system?
