Default I'd like to send everyone some rain

Wish I could!

My cat is hiding. Thunderstorms are booming over our heads. It's
pouring down rain (again). Typical September.

I have a neighbor who is paranoid about hurricanes. He keeps sending
out checklists of things to do in case we have to evacuate. Be sure to
roll up the oriental rugs and put them on the coffee table. Don't
forget to cancel your mail!

I was like, dude, if we have to evacuate I doubt anyone is going to be
delivering your mail.

OB Food: not cooked on the grill since I don't grill when it's pouring
down rain. Leftovers from the freezer. Pork chop, mashed potatoes and
gravy, steamed broccoli. No pics. You'll have to take my word for it.

Most of us consider a food picture a bonus to the post. Sheldon
requires it because he'd have nothing to criticize otherwise.

You don't wear a bra? I've never used an ATM, I don't see the
point. I don't even like to go anywhere with people who use ATMs,
they're always needing to find one and then only get $20 at a time,
and mostly there's no ATM nearby so they ask to borrow money, that
they never remember to pay back unless you bug them... they're a PIA.
I think ATMs are a sign of great immaturity, for people who are
incapable of managing their money. WTF is so difficult about keeping
at least a month's supply of cash at home and enough in ones wallet to
last a week. I've always kept a supply of cash on hand, ever since I
was six years old I've had a locked cash box.

A guy at the dog park was complaining about the dog licence guy coming
around to his house to sell him a tag. He said "$17.... who carries
money like that around these days?"

I do. I usually have at least $100.

They did here in the big power outage. The (only) island supermarket
had no lights, their tills weren't working, atms were not working. They
couldn't let customers in to the dark building.

Instead, the staff waited at the front door with trolleys. Customers
handed over a written list; the staff ran round the store with torches
to collect it, used a battery calculator to tally the bill and wrote it
in an account book. Any customer who had no cash was given credit "on
tick". They paid up later when the lights tills and atm's came back on.

Here we do things differently, at least in the bigger cities. Whether the
lights go out or not, periodically the riff raff feign some sort of
indignation and destroy property and take what they want. The politicians
fall over each other to be seen with professional poverty pimps and tell the
police to let the riff raff have space to destroy things. The riff raff
absconds with non-essential items, single shoes, etc, and it is all great
fun. Much damage is done, far in excess of the value of the goods taken.
The stores do not rebuild, and more riff raff indignation and political hand
wringing is the inevitable result.

You still don't answer your own question of where to keep cash...
plastic won't do you any good during power outages.

Power outages have nothing to do with wearing a bra. Guess you like
women who stuff their bras with dollar bills.

We haven't had dog licences since 1988 but there is talk now of dogs having
to be micro chipped and recorded on a database.

I can't remember the last time I was inside a bank. Every week I stop
at my bank's ATM and get a week's worth of cash. Anything left in
my wallet from the previous week is stashed in the gun safe. If
I have a week where I exceed my spending money, I get a little more
from the reserve in the gun safe.

$17 is chump change... I have more than $17 in postage stamps in my
desk. I carry about $30 in just singles all the time.

>I do. I usually have at least $100.

I don't leave home without a few hundred dollars in my wallet, I keep
several thousand dollars in cash at home. I don't know how any mature
adult can live with no cash... that's like a three year old toddler...
I had a piggy bank since before my 2nd birthday, was actually a smalll
metal pirate's chest, had to have a place to keep the coins grandma
gave me each visit. I remember the first day I started in
kindergarten someone from the Brooklyn Dime Saving Bank came to give a
talk on the rewards of savings and we were all given forms to be filed
out to open a passbook account. Every Monday we'd put some coins in a
brown envelope to be deposited in our account... it's never too young
to get into the habit of saving... it was amazing how all those
nickles and dimes added up over the years. It wasn't important the
amount, what was important was learning to save regularly. I still
maintain a passbook savings account. Not many banks offer a passbook
savings account so when I moved here and went to open an account at
the local branch and was told they have passbook savings I opened that
account too. Mostly I deposit the coins I roll, as of last month I
have nearly $9,000 in that account, I've never withdrawn any money. A
passbook savings account is a great method for teaching kids about
saving... there's a big difference in incentive to save between
monthly statements that usually end up shredded and a neat little book
that shows a history of all the cumulative transactions along with
accrued interest.

There are people like that and they also use an out of network ATM and
pay a $2 or so fee to get that 20 bucks.

I use the ATM because it is faster than the teller sitting 20 feet away
with a line. I don't get less than $200 though and can get up to $800
if I choose to.

Traveling out of the country I found the ATM to have the best exchange
rate too. I have a few Euros at home to carry, but the airport always
has an ATM to get more cash.

Not in the UK. You can imagine the indignation of Calgary cat lovers
when the idea of licensing was mooted. Some still think it's OK for
their pet vermin to roam freely though.

I've noticed recently at UK airports, that there are fewer bank ATMs
(with good exchange rates), and more private ones (with not-very-good
exchange rates). Easy to accidentally use one of those if you arrive
with bad jet-lag.

In the UK there used to be dog licenses (probably still are). There was the running joke that it cost more for a dog license than a marriage license, so dogs must be of more value than a spouse.

Indeed! I made comment about the dog licence in another post and new laws.

Our dog came to us with a microchip from previous owners. I believe it cost
19.00 to change it when the dog was surrendered by them. All the dogs that
are adopted through Animal Friends Connection are microchipped now before
they are allowed to be adopted.

Cats here don't require a licence, but mine are all chipped, the
ferals too. Here the feral cats have an ear tip clipped when trapped
and fixed, it's illegal to move one from where it's found. The ferals
here live in communities, there's a serious fine when caught moving
one. In this county the fine for taking or moving a feral is $1,000.
Second offence is $10,000 and a year in jail. The laws pertaining to
animals here are very severe and rigidly enforced... don't even think
about abusing a horse. I've been very involved with protecting the
feral cat communities here, with having them chipped and innoculated.
The feral cats are the best defence against the spread of rabies,
rabies are mostly spread by rodents, feral cats keep the rodent
population in check. This being a major livestock area rabies is very
serious, especially since this it NY State's major home for race
horses... Greene County houses many valuable race horses and is a
producer of prime hay. Feral cats are a very valuable commodity here,
all the stables keep as many as they can. in fact all the live stock
farmers here value feral cats. It's amazing how a few feral cats can
rid many acres of rodents, the cats hunt relentlessly. I care for six
ferals, no one here has seen evidence of rodents over 50 acres all
summer. I have no more vole problem, these cats are far more
efficient than any electronic devises I've wasted money on. How so
few cats can cover so many acres is amazing. These little guys live
to hunt.

It shouldn't be anything here. Dog owners have to pay for to license
their dogs, but cats do not have to be licensed. The license fees are
used to contract the humane society to enforce canine bylaws and helps
to support their shelter. The shelter is full of cats. There are very
few dogs, and many of them are imported from the US or from northern
(Indian) communities. It's nice that they are being "rescued" but I see
no reason for dog owners here to be forced to pay to support abandoned
cats and foreign dogs.

The humane society sends a guy around to check on dogs and to sell them
licenses. At $17 a pop it probably doesn't even pay the cost of the
labour and vehicle to go around selling them.

I wil1 blame jet lag for an issue I had about 15 years ago in Germany. I
had planned to have only enough cash for my first day and then use and
ATM. I tried two machines at one bank and then went to another bank.
When the first machine at the second bank would not take my card I was
going to move to the next machine.... and realized I had been inserting
my airmiles card.
