Default I have a Trader Joe's! Suggestions?

At long last, a Trader Joe's has opened on the Cape, and the first flyer
arrived today. Would anyone like to make some recommendations or shall I
just mortgage the house and try one of everything?

Maple syrup
Sparkling cranberry juice
Dried unsulphered apricots
Shelled walnuts and pecans
Frozen chocolate torte
Dark Belgian chocolate by the pound
Chevre
Blueberry juice

That should get you started. You should try one everything eventually,
but since you have one near by, you don't have to do it all at once.

Felice,

It could take a couple of visits to figure out what you like vs. what
they stock. There's a wall of free product sheets for the taking (also on
their website).

Products with no preservatives should be consumed quickly, before they go
bad. Don't buy large quantities of them unless you need to. I'm still
getting used to this myself.

Some products in stock are also available at other markets, perhaps for
less.

That aside, I highly recommend Reed's "extra ginger brew" ginger beer.
And if you've never had one, buy a marinated "tri-tip sirloin steak" and
enjoy. But that's my taste!

It's not a "bring the kids" kind of market, imho. It's pretty crowded
when it's busy!

Happy hunting,

Andy

The New Mexico coffee is great if you like coffee - rich, slightly
chocolatey. I also like their Greek yogurts, their sausages and
cheeses. And, the Kiss My Face soaps.

Oh my stars!! The New Mexico Coffee is AMAZING!! It's also waaaay cheaper
to buy than online, too!! I've also had the blueberry juice there and the
almond butter (think 'peanut butter' but made with almonds). Had my budget
been larger at the time I truly could have gone really nuts!

While I know one poster said it's not a 'bring your kids' kind of place... I
agree and disagree. I took my (then) almost 5 y/o and we had a blast. But
then again, there are so many things there that for the first few visits you
might want to make it an 'adults only' kind of trip... too many wonderful
items that you want to be able to pay attention to rather than making sure a
little one(s) isn't getting underfeet or distracting you from seeing an item
that you 'must have'. YMMV.

Two Buck Chuck (the reds are better than the whites, I think, but every
bottle is different) for cooking, casual drinking, marinades, or the vinegar
pot.

The huge chocolate bars, if your waistline can handle them.

Aside from this outrageous advice (A job? Did he say a job? I'm through with
jobs, folks!) you all gave me a great starter list to take to Trader Joe's.
Unhappily, our local doesn't (yet?) carry wine, so the Two Buck Chuck is
out, but Petey, I will stay alive until tomorrow if only to buy a truffle.
Or two, or more.

Thank you all.

Add to your list their single origin chocolate bars. They have two and a
third bar that is a combination of two different single origin chocolates.

Their are no TJs in my area. But when I did have one I used to hit
their wine department frequently. Make sure you stop by that.

It may never get a liquor license. Massachusetts is funny
like that--you almost have to inherit a license from Uncle Guido.

The Sauv Blanc is good, as is the Shiraz. The Merlot was not
spectacular. We had some of the Shiraz tonight with Cuban food.

I've been to Trader Joes's in Chicago once, as an adventure. The cheap caviar
worked well enough in the taramasalata (turned it sort of purple - kind of a
nice twist; tasted OK) and I am munching on their olives. The 3 buck chuck is
a good deal.

But I don't like the place. It's a Disneyland cartoon version of the co-op I
shopped at, belonged to in college. I don't like chains. I shop at a real
vegetible market less than a mile from this store and there is at lest one
ethnic grocer nearby where I usually get the tarama. There are Mexican, Puerto
Rican, Polish and Korean supermarkets within a short bus ride where I get
better stuff than at Trader Joe's. I can get to great Arabic and Indian
neighborhoods and markets in 45 minutes on public transportation.

Maybe I'm spoiled. If you live in a suburb or a red state, good luck with the
Trader Joe's franchise.

I stock up on their nuts, chocolates and dried fruits for baking primarily--
probably the best selection I've seen.

One year they had a huge selection of hard ciders which was fun. Their triple
gingersnap cookies are pretty tasty as well. When I do food baskets for
gifts, TJ's has a wide variety of affordable items- you might not have to
mortgage the house. =)

PA is even stranger. We are only one of 2 states left where the state is the
only one who can operate liquor stores. So no 2 buck chuck here either.

Pot Stickers, located in the freezer section...they are pre-cooked so all you
have to do is...

heat 'em up and simmer 'em in chicken broth with some diced green onion and
fresh grated ginger...won ton soup! Simple and delicious...

pan fry 'em, put a little soy sauce or hoisin sauce on the side for dippin'...

deep fry 'em...for a simple but elegant hors' douvre...

IIRC they come in chicken and pork flavors...about 25 pieces per bag.

What brand? They sometimes carry the same ones that CostCo only
carries at xmas.... btw: Costco has doubled the price on them,
probably because their supply is limited due to TJ's carrying it too.

Fresh produce is not why one should go to Trader Joes. You go because
they have hard to find cheese, good wine at prices no one can beat,
and other rarities. You are not spoiled, you are just not going their
for the things it excels at that the mom and pop places do not, can
not and will not carry.

There are several things I regularly purchase at TJ'S.

The egg and dairy prices are usually lower than the stupidmarkets. The
heavy cream is a staple around the house.

Fresh squeezed OJ (unpasteurized)
Hawaiian Potato Chips and their tortilla chips (oh yes the Garlic Salsa)
Dried fruits and nuts especially the unsulfurated apricots, dried
cranberries, almonds.
The seem to have the lowest price on Steel cut Irish oatmeal as well as
Kashi cereals.
The cheeses are quite good especially the Dubliner (Irish cheddar) also
their assortment of blue's and Roquefort's.
The jars of Sauerkraut and 1/2 sour pickles (major yum)
They have a good selection of "cooking" olive oils and balsamic.
Their Cracked wheat sour dough bread makes great toast.
Best price on Vanilla beans ( I use them to flavor sugar.)
I have fopund their liquor prices high.
Don't forget Two Buck Chuck ( $1.99 Charles Shaw wine)

Enjoy the exploration.
