In some cases you are correct. It was used or damaged. OTOH, I told
the story before how some merchandise is perfectly new, good, tested,
but marked refurbished to sell at outlet stores. I've seen this first
hand at a few companies I visited.

As an aside, the same goes for many things sold with different model
numbers. Staples may carry one number, Best Buy another, identical but
for some added accessory.

Yup. This gets around MSRP price breaking and soothes retailers who
keep to such things.

And makes price comparisons tricky, which is its goal, I believe.
