I'll claim apples vs oranges there, Bryan. I'm neither a nutso sports

Mr.Kitty never did that either but I know he loved me and was content.
This was HIS house. When I came home, he stayed on *his* chair in the

talked to. He just wanted me to come to him and he would purrr.

My older cat, time wise, went out one morning and didn't come home for
many days. When he finally did come back, he came with a girlfriend. A
Himalayan Persian that had been abandoned. I say that because the fur
on her underside was all matted and contained leaves, sticks, etc. She
hadn't been cared for. She came in and stayed but was very aloof and
nervous for a good while. Eventually, she let me trim off all the
matted fur and brush her out.

For the rest of her life, I could pick her up and pet her and she
would be happy and purr but she would never come to me on her own. As
I would switch rooms, she would follow me but then settled down on the
opposite side of the room. She must have been really mistreated before
she came to live with me.

but most people don't realize how much maintenance they require and so
many try to get rid of them within a short time. Many shelters won't

SPCA here won't accept them at all.

I just wish they lived longer. I get so attached and then they die. So
far, one month before age 7 is the longest lived here. Mia will take
over the "longest lived here" record on November 17. Only 4-5 weeks
away.

I'm trying to hold off getting new ferrets until I retire. Sad to have
to cage them for 11 hours a day when I'm working but you really have
to with those creatures. When Mia was younger, she got into many
life-threatening situations even when I was home.

hand approaching her is an ingrained threat. How long have you had
her? Give it time and she will slowly begin to trust you and her new
life with you.

If YOU are being nice to her all the time, she will eventually come

Consider making your next pet a cat, they live longer and there's no
need to cage them. I always suggest getting at least two litter
mates, they keep each other company, and it's not so hard on you if
one doesn't live a long life... I've always had five or six (I don't
like to split up a litter), I've never had any that became ill and
passed on anywhere close to each other. It's really no more work
taking care of one cat or six. Cat food is inexpensive, the so called
gourmet food in tiny cans is really more for the owner's ego, cats
can't read the labels and don't care about price... dried food is
prefered for the cat's health anyway. Use canned in small amounts for
a treat, buy the large 14 ounce cans, much more affordable, one can
will feed six cats. Instead of buying those pricey tiny pouches of
treats I feed kitten food at a tenth the price, actually the cats
prefer it to the designated treats. I buy Amazon's cat litter, it's
half the price and better than any other, and it's delivered right to
my door, free shipping... I order three 40 pound bags a month, keeping
litter pans clean is the best way to cut down on Vet bills. There are
lots of Vets that donate their services, they accept a small donation,
phone the local humane society to get hooked up... here I was referred
to Animal Kind, excellent service at very low cost, they only do cats,
ferals and strays:

That's very hard to have to endure so often. When I get a new
cat I hope for at least 12 years before I have to go through
the pain of losing a pet again.

I always get female cats, though my first two were males.
My female cats have been very affectionate, so I don't think
you can go by gender.

There is a man who walks a lovely medium-sized dog down my street. He
adopted her from a shelter and she had been abused. If you reach out
your hand she cringes and shies away. She's afraid she's going to be
struck. It's very sad.

Absolutely. He made it sound like never again. Now he's saying he'll
wait until retirement. That makes more sense since he explained how
they need that much attention.

I know nothing about ferrets other than I think they're cute (and one
once scared my mother - it got loose and a little boy came looking for
it.) Cats tend to live longer. Persia was nearly 16. Cats pretty much
take care of themselves. All they need is a litter box, food and water.
Oh, and some toys. Cats sleep a lot so going to work, not a problem.

Some cats don't want any other cat around (litter mates don't
necessarily get along simply because they're related). Some cats are
"only" cats.

Persia was perfectly happy to be an only cat. In fact, she hated the
sight of any other cats. She'd hiss and growl and puff up (Halloween
cat!) if she saw another cat in the yard or on the patio.

Buffy doesn't want another cat, either. She was beaten up by the other
cat, Frankie, in her former household. When I first brought her home
she hid. She was expecting to be pounced on. Now she's a very relaxed,
affectionate cat.

Cats sleep most of the time so she certainly doesn't worry about when I
leave the house. She's got food, water and lots of toys. She does know
when I'm home. She sits on the pet steps in the dining room window.
(Persia did that, too.) She hears my car and takes a look. Might be
something for her in that shopping bag! <G>

I also don't agree it's cheaper to have a bunch of cats. Sorry but the
vet bills alone can easily run into thousands (for years) with just one
cat. BTDT.

I do know you're happy with however many you have. I wouldn't be and
Buffy wouldn't be, either. I'll stick with just the one cat.

Gender has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a cat will be
affectionate... depends mostly on their genetics. Barny is extremely
affectionate, he's my shadow, I can't go anywhere without him... but
he's been with me from the time I took him from the barn at about six
weeks old, his sister Kali is much more aloof and prefers to be by
herself yet they were taken from the barn together... I've had as many
affectionate cats of both genders... I chalk it up to cat business.

That's what I always meant. I'll definitely adopt some furry ones in
