Default Bulk Barn

Discovered "Bulk Barn" yesterday.
http://www.bulkbarn.ca/en-ca/index.html
It appears to be a Canadian company but I'm sure there must be US
equivalents.
It is a veritable Aladdin's Cave and the temptation to buy things you
might need is enormous. I stuck to what I will soon use: white choc
chips, gluten flour, sprouted whole-wheat flour (for recipes in
Reinhart's latest book) and pink peppercorns (for sprinkling in salads
and also making "honey-pink peppercorn madeleines).
However, I did give in and bought some Liquorice Allsorts!

They are are a number of them in the Niagara area and I shop there a
lot. You have to watch the prices because some things are really cheap
there while others are not much of a bargain. It is a good place to buy
steel cut oatmeal because they charge the same price per pound for it as
they do for large flake or quick cooking. The Wheatlets are their
version of Cream of Wheat but lacks the bran. I buy all my herbs and
spices there and they are usually about 10% of the price we pay for
pr-packaged stuff. I get my candied fruits for fruit cakes there.

The savings on things like flour depend on the quantities you buy. A
pound of AP flour might compare favourably with the cost per pund for
buying a small bag of flour, but it you do a lot of baking and use a lot
of flour, buying large bags at the grocery store is usually a better deal.

Given all the good stuff they have in their stores and the good prices
on a lot of it, I am always a little disappointed to see that so many of
the people I see there are loading up on candy. I suppose it doesn't
really matter to me if they want to load up on that crap instead of
taking advantage of the other good deals, but then I have to consider
that perhaps they are making so much money off the candy that they can
use the concept for me to get good deals on the stuff I want.

BTW.... some people may carp about the herbs and spices being out int he
open and subject to deterioration.... poppycock. When I can fill my
container of ground ginger for 20-30 cents instead of $4-5 I will take
the bulk stuff. I am saving enough that I can toss it if it starts to
degrade, but I can go in there once every 6 months and replace all my
herbs and spices for the cost of 2 bottles in the grocery store.

I occasionally buy those things in bulk at local Dutch shops.

I had been looking for a source for bulk pink peppercorns but until I
went to this store, I had only come across the grossly overpriced jars.
I would have bought dried fruit and nuts for baking but I had already
stocked up on those before going there. I compared prices and I will be
shopping there in the future for those things.

Agreed there! I usually buy my bread flour from a wholesale outlet in
20kg bags for about $17. However, I'm trying to find a bulk source for
stone ground, heritage (Red Fife) whole wheat flour that can cost over
$8 *per kg*!!!!!!
The sprouted wheat flour was expensive but it is a very special product
and I want to try it as Reinhart raves about it.

There were some women there buying large quantities of candy. They were
probably buying for Halloween but it was difficult to squeeze past them.

The bulk chocolate for cooking is excellent at BB I find. I also buy
dog bones there for a friendly dog upstairs and he thinks they are
pretty damn good when I hand him the bag to carry home

Yes, I can imagine. That is a problem with candy eaters ;-)

I don't know of any stores like that here but some do have bulk items.

There's one in Belleville, about a 45 minute drive from here. Every
time we are up there we go in and stock up on a few things.

Oatmeal, some spices, and nuts are the main things I buy there.

For the record, I never once even considered sleeping with you. And
you know that. You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was
going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the
total blue.

After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3
years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of
romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY
MOVING IN WITH YOU?

That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the
screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too
spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands
down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least
he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar
at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2
years.

Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why
your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation
and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd
prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo.

And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bullshit and visions of
grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done
in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people
about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as
if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're
manic depressive mixed with habitual liar.

Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles.

My SIL used to shop at "Mr. Bulky," until it closed in her area. Google
says there were as many as 22, in the Midwest. But now they're down to
one in Akron (or Cuyahoga Falls) Ohio. Check out the picture and you
will see the emphasis on candy.

Mr. Bulky is a great name although it sounds like a guy's big and tall store. Times are tough for candy stores in the US these days. Being in a room with wall to wall candies isn't so exciting as it was 50 years ago - even for kids.

---

I must agree with you. I remember when one of the movie theaters put in
some bulk candy. I was excited to be able to buy a small amount of just
what I wanted. Until I paid for that handful of sweets. Over $8! The next
time I went to that theater, the bulk candy was gone.

Then I remember being at some weird little mall with my husband, but I can't
remember now what state we were in. Again, excited because they had a bulk
candy store. Seemed appealing with all of those barrels. But when I began
looking, there was nothing new there. I did buy a few hard candies.

The mall here had a candy store. We took daughter and her friend in there
when they were quite a bit younger. Again, no big deal. Everything they
had could be purchased elsewhere and for a whole lot less. But my husband
still told them to buy bags of candy. I think the friend may have eaten
hers. Not sure. The bag that my kid got, never got eaten. She didn't even
want the candy but my husband put some seemingly random items in there and
told me to pay for it.

More recently my mom called me, very excited to tell me that they had put a
new candy store in the mall. So I looked. Doesn't seem any different than
the other one but the name has changed. Oh. Candy. Big whoop.

Then again, my mom tends to get excited and I can't see why. Like when she
told me about the root beer floats they'd had where she lives. I was kind
of like... Uh huh. I take you to the store at least once a week, as does
my bro or SIL. And you have a kitchen with a fridge. At any time, you
could buy root beer and ice cream. So... I don't get it.
