Default Grocery Store Dinner for Christmas

This is a first for me. I have always cooked from scratch as much as possible. I am doing chemo, and had an infusion Monday. I will be down and out with fatigue over Christmas. I ordered the "complete" meal from out local Sprouts store. They use a "natural" turkey, so picked them over the big chain stores. At least we will have food in the house and lots of left overs (just the two of us this year). I am curious how this meal will be, but it will fill the bill.

Best of luck with the chemo, and I'm sure the meal will be fine.

Depends on the grocery store. One I'd always bet would have excellent prepared meals is Straub's, an old private small chain here in STL noted for their excellence in foods, etc. Much the gourmet grocers, kinda pricey but worth it!

Sorry to hear you're having to do "chemo"; hope it kills whatever it's supposed to kill without killing any more of your body than necessary!

I'm sorry about the chemo and I'm sending all good thoughts your way.

As far as the dinner goes, I'm reminded of Jill's mother's experience,
the whole meal, it turned out, arrived frozen and in need of cooking,
something like that, so make sure you know what to expect with no
unwelcome Christmas surprise.

I'm so sorry to hear that you have treatments going on during the
holidays. Perhaps the next infusion will not be so difficult for you.
I hope so. Warm wishes for a good holiday.

I hope you do well with the chemo treatments. Take it easy - that's
as good a reason as any to take advantage of a store cooked meal. I
think stores are improving their products yearly. DD has ordered
fully prepared, (but still uncooked) turkey for the past two years and
they were amazing.

I hope it is filling and nourishing as you need that right now. Sounds
like a great plan to make it all as easy as possible. Best wishes for
the chemo treatments and I don't envy the chemo brain side effect, among
others. Merry Christmas and get better!

We got that once and it was a disappointment. I also ordered a dinner
online once and again a disappointment. Instead of getting the turkey
breast I had ordered, they sent a huge, whole turkey! This created a
problem as it came frozen and I had to quickly cook up some stuff from the
freezer to accommodate it until ready to use it. Then buy a pan to heat it
in as I had nothing that large. And then then there was a lot of mess and
waste because we didn't want that much turkey, for anything! Also, the
sides were disappointing because they had a lot of crap in them like soybean
oil instead of butter.

We no longer have a Boston Market here but when we did, we once got dinner
from them. It was excellent. But there was a problem. We wanted more
food! We were given the exact amount of portions for the number of people
we had at the table but for some things, we wanted more. And there was no
more. My dad said that the next year, he would just order two dinners. But
sadly, they are no longer here.

I got the turkey breast from Schwans and it is really very good. Cooks in
about 2.5 hours from frozen. And it's not huge. Yes, there will be some
leftover, but not so much that it leaves me attempting to find uses for the
turkey or throwing it out. For this house, it works best to cook just what
is needed, unless I know ahead of time that the leftovers will get eaten.

Yes! I meant to mention that as well but got too hung up on the food and
failed to mention the chemo.

The dinner is here. It looks okay. The turkey is actually very nice. I wanted a small turkey and this one is small and looks nicely cooked. It will warm and carve very nicely. It is the star of the show, so that is good. The sides are rather plain, but as expected. Mashed potato (big deal), stuffing (actually looks good), vegetable, bread, cranberry sauce, and gravy (should be interesting). I will bake some yams, plain butter and salt, no sweetener. I bought some pies and so we are set.

Tonight is snacks and ham sandwiches.

I am very tired, but happy to be here with the one I love for Christmas.

Thanks for all the good wishes, and may everyone have a very Merry Christmas.

My father and I went out for Thanksgiving dinner one year when out former Thanksgiving dinner cooking partner my sister went to Ca to be with her daughter and her newborn. We went to a local somewhat fancy German restaurant, and their Thanksgiving dinner was passable but was not what we were used to eating for Thanksgiving. Because we got damned GOOD at making Thanksgiving dinner!!

Best vibes, DaleP, for a fast recovery. It sounds like your holiday food
will be just fine.

Our local supermarket does ham, turkey or beef whole dinners, all ready
to heat and eat....whoever the food stylist is who did their commercials
deserves a CLIO! They were spectacular.

dalep, I'm sorry to be late saying I hope the chemo works. I'm sorry to
hear about the need for it.

The meal Nancy mentioned wasn't Christmas. It was one of the funniest
Thanksgivings I remember. The television and newspaper ads all said
"Let Kroger do it for you!" Mom decided she didn't want to cook that
year. She never did like to cook.

So she called and ordered the T-day dinner with all the "trimmings!".
Mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, some sort of vegetable and a pie. To
be picked up the afternoon of.

She, my middle brother and I went to Kroger to pick it up. This was
around 2PM. As my brother was carrying the box out to the car he
commented the box was freezing cold. He opened the box after setting it
in the trunk.

Uh oh. The turkey was frozen solid. And not cooked. All the side
dishes were frozen solid, too. The ad was certainly misleading. It was
not a ready to serve, just pick it up meal. (Let Kroger do what?!)

When my mother got mad, she got mad. She was feisty. She marched back
into the store and demanded her money back. I remember her saying "What
is wrong with you people?! I won't be able to cook this for four or
five days!"

You go, girl.

She got her money back. Then we went to a *different* store. We had
steak and baked potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner that year.
