The Italian name isn't confined to Italian. They're also called
borlotti beans in Australia, for instance. In other words: beans often
go by different names in English.

They're not the ones who do that. Oddly enough, after I spoke to the trash
collection people, they haven't parked there once. I wonder if they spoke
to them?

And they're called that here too! Just as Navy and pea beans are the same
thing.

I didn't get any this year. I have some pintos quick soaking now. They say
best by 10/15 so they may take a little longer to cook. Oddly enough most
of what I have in the cupboard are navy beans. They were so hard to find, I
must have ordered a case of them or something. I don't remember. I do
remember that I did not make the baked beans for the 4th of July like I
normally do. I think I will make some next week.

Different texture. Not mealy and the taste is different.

I got some canned beans I think at Walmart. I think they called them purple
eye beans. Looked like black eye but not the same color. I tried them.
Did not quite taste like the black eye. Flavor was very mild. They were
okay. Just not what I was expecting. To me, the black eye have a strong
flavor. That's why I like them.

They do not taste the same to me at all. For instance, dark red kidney
beans have a very strong flavor to me. Light red have a less pronounced
flavor and white ones are very mild. I like to use the dark red in chili
but if I am making soup, if I use dark red, I like to use white or chickpeas
or even some other form of bean to add an additional flavor. They also have
different textures. Some are more mealy.

Ok, so the colour can be an indication. I'm only really familiar with
chickpeas (hummus) and the white beans that go into jars of
baked beans, but I want to try more types.

It's not so much the flavor as the texture! You can really control it with dried beans! I like my beans to have a little "bite" to them! Canned beans are always mush!

Yes, we just made a pot of dahl from dried green split
peas (not a bean, I know) and they still have quite some bite.

Have you considered going up and knocking on their door?

There are new people a couple houses down from us, and that's what we
did. Introduced ourselves, told them where we lived if they needed
anything.

That sounds basically like what I might like. Only addition is to bake
them in the oven until they thicken.

I was at the grocery this morning, and looked at the beans.
They were sold out of navy beans ($1.39 per pound, marked
down from their usual prices of $1.99 per pound), but had
several other kinds.

It's too hard for me to do that. I tried a couple of times when the other

Try the dark kidney if you can find them. And while I love black bean soup,
provided it is made a certain way such as not with potatoes in it, I do not
particularly care for them on their own. Pintos are very flavorful too.

They be introverts and falsly interpret YOUR behavior as "have no interest in the neighbors."

You should call out to them verbally and felicitously to THEM!! In person. I sterpped up and introduced myself to my new neighbors. And good thing too! Because Willie just died recently! But I know his widow Joyce and met two of his sons too! All felicitous relationships! :-)

I don't want a blog. I am here to talk about food. Thread drift.

Look up recipes for Cuban black beans, serve them with ropa vieja and
rice. You can cook the ropa in your crockpot, because it needs time.

Thanks. I see a recipe for Cuban black beans that uses Goya beans. I
don't know what they are but the blackest ones I can get from
<http://affordablewholefoods.com.au/index.php?searchStr=bean&Submit=Search&a=viewCat>
are black turtle beans from the US. I guess I can use those.

I don't go by brand. If it's all black, I buy it. Never seen a
"turtle" bean... sound like a fancy name dreamed up to separate you
from your money.

Lol, I didn't realise Goya was a brand. Yes, I'm sure any black bean
will do.

I'm gonna make a batch of my baked beans that never saw an oven. Sweet beans they should be called better I think. I use 1/2 a bag of black beans, then some big red kidney beans, garbonzos, black eyed peas and...that's all. A tomato paste base with beef boullion, brown sugar, molasses, sweet paprika, black pepper, cayenene, bay leaf and I dice a couple huge red onions and sweat the onions a little with the fat renderings I get from frying up 5 or 6 thick strips of bacon! And if I try not to eat the bacon I crumble it up as a finish step. Then cook a little together, but not enopugh to turn the beans to mush. I like my beans to have a little el dente bite!

I guess all black beans taste pretty similar anyway. We just had
black beans in a dahl kinda thing. They were very good and tasted
quite meaty. A bit like mince meat for non meat eaters.
