Major shops don't offer discounts for cash, but when you deal with the
owner of local stores it may be possible. Buying a major appliance on
line is not something I'd do. I can get competitive prices and service
locally. I don't want to have a 350# refrigerator delivered on the
doorstep, I want it put in place and the old one hauled away.

Small appliances is a different story. I just bought a toaster from
Amazon because the local stores did not have what I wanted. I use my
Amazon CC and get 3% back too.

It has often been said that Best Buy is Amazon's showroom.

I thought I read about that happening back East years ago right here
on rfc... it didn't show up here, so it must have fizzled somewhere.

I still don't understand how the new chipped cards are any safer than
the old style swipe.

All my money is happy money! I can't remember the last time I went out

I didn't write the above but ... those self scanners have been in use for a
long time in our stores. I don't use them but many do. There is a special
area they go to when they are finished where an assistant does a check so
far as I can see, but I suspect they just pay with their cards.

The transaction is encrypted with a single-use key, and decrypted
on the other end. The old-style magnetic strips could be copied
easily, and there was a whole cottage industry in vandalizing
ATMs and standalone credit-card readers (like gas station pumps)
and installing duplicators. The hapless citizen swipes his card,
the information is read from the magnetic stripe, and the felon
has a copy of the credit card, to use as he pleases.

The new system is much more complex; it'll probably take some
time before it's cracked and new fraud arises.

In the last few years, supermarkets in my city have become far more
cosmopolitan. We can get most any food seen on TV cooking shows as
well as items for a growing multinational community.

Stop&Shop have had that system for a few years now - very like the
system used by Waitrose in the UK.

The self scanners I use are a flatbed scanner, kind of like the glass
bed on your printer. You pass the item's bar code over the glass to
be read.

That becomes even more of a problem when they have few and fewer
cashiers because they are pushing people to self checkout.

OK Ophy....I'm in 'teasing YOU' mode now.

That is what we have in the self service checkouts. We do as you, pass the
item over the glass to be read.

The self scanners I described, are handsets taken around the shop by the
customer. Did you scroll right down to where it shows how the scanner
works? As you go around the store you scan the product barcode as you
shop. The handset tracks your spending too. It gives you a spending total
of everything you have scanned so far including promotions.
There is a button to remove an item if you change your mind and you can scan
through the items you have in the list when/if you want.

Hmm I think I have talked myself into using them lol

Funny how banks are making huge profits these days while interest rates
are pitifully low. It is annoying after years of putting away money form
earnings and inheritances into savings accounts. When various accounts
come due and I have to go and see the financial consultant I see that
the money I will get from it barely pays for the gas to drive over
there. I can't help but think back to 1977 when I bought our house and
was paying 10 1/4 % on the mortgage, and then had to renew in 1982 at 18
1/2%. Now that I have money in the bank it I am lucky to get 1-1/2%.

We are retired now and enjoy each others' company. In the past his work
often took him away from home and eventually I retired a bit early to travel
with him. Now we are both retired we appreciate the time we have together
and we make the most of it Oh and just so you know, our money (pensions,
savings et al) we have combined. We have no 'his and hers' money! We have
'our' money!!!

It wouldn't be efficient to have all customers self check. Albertsons
dropped the practice all together because it cost more to run. I
think the self serve is to keep everybody calm and occupied, sort of
like how the air hostess passes out drinks and nibbles on an airplane

Not just us then? thought not. I don't carry much money around because
a) Himself is always with me and b) I have my cards!

Not a lot of point in us both carrying a lot of money. We both have the
same access to our funds.
