Buying a major appliance on line is not something I'd do. I can get competitive prices and service locally. I don't want to have a 350# refrigerator delivered on the doorstep, I want it put in place and the old one hauled away. Small appliances is a different story. I just bought a toaster from Amazon because the local stores did not have what I wanted. I use my Amazon CC and get 3% back too. |

The transaction is encrypted with a single-use key, and decrypted on the other end. The old-style magnetic strips could be copied easily, and there was a whole cottage industry in vandalizing ATMs and standalone credit-card readers (like gas station pumps) and installing duplicators. The hapless citizen swipes his card, the information is read from the magnetic stripe, and the felon has a copy of the credit card, to use as he pleases. The new system is much more complex; it'll probably take some time before it's cracked and new fraud arises. Cindy Hamilton |

The self scanners I described, are handsets taken around the shop by the customer. Did you scroll right down to where it shows how the scanner works? As you go around the store you scan the product barcode as you shop. The handset tracks your spending too. It gives you a spending total of everything you have scanned so far including promotions. It is annoying after years of putting away money form earnings and inheritances into savings accounts. When various accounts come due and I have to go and see the financial consultant I see that the money I will get from it barely pays for the gas to drive over there. I can't help but think back to 1977 when I bought our house and was paying 10 1/4 % on the mortgage, and then had to renew in 1982 at 18 1/2%. Now that I have money in the bank it I am lucky to get 1-1/2%. |
