For the past couple of years, she's been the bread maker, so I'd have to
compete with her fully hand made bread. I dunno

For me personally? Just as disgusting. However, creepy old nude men are to be expected there. So it's highly unlikely I would have them inflicted on me unexpectedly. Creepy old men outdoors, however, are usually hoping for just that. Not cool.

So by implication, you're not old and soft?

No, not just yet at least. They're in pretty good shape as they take
their boat out nearly every day and pulling up crayfish pots, which
can take some effort.

bbm = big breasted male? I know of one living in Texas, but the air
fare might make the cost prohibitive. The airline may also insist on
two tickets, too.

You don't have to hear anything by not camping nearby.

It was my domain once and I didn't mind when she took over, but I still

I'd spend the rest of my life doing that kind of stuff if I could talk

Sadly, with wilderness camping you often are far enough away so a cell
phone won't work. Best you can do is to carry an expensive satellite
phone but then, even a mountain can block your reception. Best thing
is to tell someone where you are going and an estimated time of
finishing the trip. If something happens, at least you know that
someone will come looking for you eventually. Also best to not do this
alone. Two people are better than one. Also bring along a dog...they
can alert you to or even scare off say a bear wandering into your
campsite.

Ok but might I suggest you don't try it unless you are young and very fit.

It's not really a good idea to bring a dog on wilderness camping trips.
It means more food to haul. Most parks require that dog be on a leash at
all times. If there is an incident with a bear or other critter there
is the risk of the dog getting injured, and then you are going to have
to carry it out of the bush for medical treatment.

I'm afraid that doesn't help.

Well, bribe the missus with something to lessen the impact of the new
bread machine sitting on the kitchen counter?

Sadly, with wilderness camping you often are far enough away so a cell
phone won't work. Best you can do is to carry an expensive satellite
phone but then, even a mountain can block your reception. Best thing
is to tell someone where you are going and an estimated time of
finishing the trip. If something happens, at least you know that
someone will come looking for you eventually. Also best to not do this
alone. Two people are better than one. Also bring along a dog...they
can alert you to or even scare off say a bear wandering into your
campsite.

====

Or a computer that isn't working. I'm having to use my dh's right now because
mine is down and Win 7 live mail is a lot different than Win Mail, so dunno if
working or not, but at least I'm not stuck in a tent. LOL

Err, in Aus, that's MOST of the time!

Not usually a problem.

In Aus, that's generally a requirement though the use of a Personal
Locator Beacon (PLB) does make the task of rescue services much easier.

The use of a PLB is becoming popular for non maritime travelling.

Most campsites in Aus don't allow dogs these days. That's because
campgrounds tend to be in places like national parks and it's to protect
the local fauna. There are dog friendly caravan parks but they are in a
minority. Anyway, we don't have a lot of bears wandering around, apart
from 'drop bears', of course. ;-)

You're right, but I'd want it as a backup plan. Now, the backup plan is
supermarket bread in the freezer.

One time I saw an on-line article that argued that a bread machine does
not save any money over buying bread in a store. Their logic was that
going to a bakery outlet and buying the cheapest bread there is actually
cheaper than the cost of the bread plus the cost of the bread machine.

My interpretation of this article was that it was saying the following:
"If you buy the cheapest bread at the store, that is indeed cheaper than
using a bread machine."

Well, I tried it (went to a bakery outlet), and at least at the one I
went to, the brand that was the cheapest at the outlet was a bit cheaper
than the same brand at the regular grocery store, but not actually by
very much.

Also, if I remember correctly it was not actually cheaper than the
cheapest bread in the store, just cheaper than that brand in the store.

To explain this statement, brand X bread costs $1.20/loaf at the outlet,
but costs $1.50/loaf at the regular store. However, the cheapest bread
at the store (usually the "store brand") might be $1.00/loaf, especially
if it happens to be the week that it falls under a 10 for $10.00 special.

Well, people buy a lot bread for different reasons.

One person might think something like "bread is bread, why should I buy
any thing but the cheapest in the store."

Others might buy the cheapest because it is all they can afford and they
think that for some reason they cannot make bread by hand. Well, I think
they would be much better off both from a standpoint of finances and a
standpoint of getting much better tasting bread if they bought some
inexpensive loaf pans, a bread knife (if they don't already have one),
and yeast in the bulk packages, and learns to make bread by hand.
Kneading dough takes a bit of practice, I suppose, but it does not take
an advanced degree from Harvard either.

Some might be okay with "supermarket bread," but they prefer the higher
end brands, such as Orowheat, which I have seen for as much as $5.00/
loaf. I think those higher end brands are a bit cheaper than that at the
bakery outlet.

Others might not like supermarket bread, as many have expressed on this
NG, and prefer freshly baked bread from a bread machine.

Others say that bread machine bread does not quite taste as good as bread
made by hand. Or perhaps they like making it because they find kneading
the dough to be therapeutic.

Still others might think that making bread from a poolish or sponge is
better than a straight dough method.

I have not made bread from a poolish or sponge, but I alternate between
the methods that I talked about before that. The bread machine bread is
cheaper for me because I sort of inherited my current bread maker from my
parents when they moved out to NC to live with my sister.

Brian Christiansen (Still trying to figure out what on earth a deer
caught in a forest fire has to do with cooking, or at least why anybody
would actually think that.)

If memory serves, the bread at our outlet store is 50 cents a loaf,
or $2.69 for the same thing at the grocery store. Sweet, squishy,
white bread, which we use only for stuffing a turkey or pig.

For toast and sandwiches, we get one of these:

Price no object.

I'm not that bad, although we do have an ice cream maker that we
rarely use. Oh, and a dehydrator to make tempeh, that I should use
more often

I must admit the dehydrator moment comes more often than the ice cream
machine, but the latter is stashed very nicely and the dehydrator is
instantly available

The dehydrator isn't really suited for what I bought it for and I can't
really think of any other good uses. Why dehydrate apricots
if you can buy them fresh? Who wants to eat a dehydrated slice of
pineapple? Maybe I'm missing something. It was an expensive machine. It
must have a use
