Default Beware canned tomatoes

Not that they are more susceptible to cow-doody toxins, but there have
been some weird labelling issues I've run across.

For one, I inadvertently bought some diced tomatoes "in tomato sauce".
Think about that fer a second. Not tomato juice, but tomato "sauce".
I now have both. Quite a difference! You do not want tomato "sauce"
unless yer making a red suace (if then).

Also, I recently bought a large can of "crushed" tomatoes. Usta be,
they were merely a very coarse "crush". Now, they are more like
"puree" than "crush". You do not want "crushed" tomatoes in yer
minestrone, trust me. (these are all Kroger brands)

I've noticed that change too (not Kroger). Wish it was rougher.

Everything I buy ends up being a Roma tomato. How can I buy something else?

Not news. Cooks Illustrated pointed this out years ago.

I generally get "petite diced" packed in juice for soups.

Agree about the crushed. My home-canned are pretty good. I can hit
them with a blender if I need to.

If I'm still cooking, this coming season, I plan to get into canning.
I like pickled foods. I made a gallon of kimchi, but got burnt out on it
before finishing it.
