Victoria Day? When I was a kid it was Firecracker Day. Then it became
May 2-4, as in case of beer.

I would like to suggest we change it to Victoria's Secret Day.

It's just a memorial for her birthday. She was a woman ahead of her
time and a very good artist.

I wouldn't, Queen Victoria was more interesting than you know, read a
few books and see how she arrived at heir to the throne at a young age
and how she coped.

I believe that it was her _father's_ three older bothers, not _her_
brothers.

I have the PBS series Victoria and Albert, it is very interesting and I
watch it about once a year. I think some of the decorations etc. from the
Victorian Era are just beautiful.

You're right. Still.... nothing she did to become queen other than to be
born into the succession.

Not to mention the clothing of that era.

Happy birthday Queen Victoria! Without googling I'll surmise she was
the Queen, the grandmother of Wilhelm the (?) (WWI), and the mother of
a Czarina. Her son Bertie became Edward VII and so on. The love of her
life was Albert. Again without me googling, anybody may fire away!
Long live Victoria! from a Anglophile who may have gotten some of the
facts wrong.
A wonderful book on her reign was named "Dreadnought" which started out
"Queen Victoria was mostly German". The book was all about England and
Victoria's influence on the world with a big tip of the hat to
Churchill and Jacky Fisher. I also have Churchill's WWII memoirs in
first American edition and have read all six books more than once.
Get used to the cold. It's 50 degrees F as I speak here in Nevada with
six days of rain forecast. Way unusual but we love rain when we can get
it.

I think you're correct - anyway, at 18 she suddenly found herself
Queen without any training. She had a bad relationship with her
mother, none with her father and that probably accounts for why she
was so attached to Albert.

At Osborne House you can see all the water colours she did of her
children as they grew, no cameras then She was an expert with
water colours, not the easiest medium.

You're being obtuse again - I didn't suggest she grabbed the throne,
fought for it, wanted it. She came unexpectedly to the throne, but
made a good job of it. Still, I suppose she was a woman so you don't
want to hear any good about her!

He's an idiot. I wonder if he's ever even been to Canada.

I have. I grew up in a place where Canada was a 15-mile drive
to the south. It made a nice day trip.

When I about 5 years old, we drove about 15 miles across the border
into Mexico to attend a bullfight. My only memory of that is from the
old home movies. Looking at them though...what an evil and cruel way
to end a bull's life. I wonder if Mexico still does that? I know Spain
does and prefaced with the "running of the bulls" tradition.

It's a pretty cruel thing to see. First the something-a-dores ride out
on horses and throw spears into the bull to weaken it. Eventually, the
super-hero matadores come out to torment it with red cape, a nifty
swerve out of the way, and maybe a sword thrust.

Bullfighting is nothing more than evil torture games. Much like the
Roman gladiator arena events.

They're picadors, and in the old days of bullfighting on Channel 36 where I
am, I was always pulling for the bull.

Had our rock in the middle of nowhere not been stolen by American
businessmen, we might be celebrating Victoria Day today. The Hawaiian
Royals were enamored by the British Monarchy and modeled their rule
after the Brits. We're a part of the United States and yet our state
flag is dominated by the Union Jack. I always thought that was kind of
weird.
