The EU has made other countries do that until they got the result it wanted.
I am sure they would try it here if they could.

Yes, but if they'd become independent, they'd then be able to rejoin on
their own. I mean, it's all up to them, isn't it?

True, it only happened a couple of days ago And, apparently, caught
everybody by surprise.

It certainly did!! The whole thing is a big mess. Labour is pulling itself
to pieces and I read now that some tories are plotting to keep Boris out!

"Mr Johnson's allies raised concerns that his rivals are plotting to change
the rules for the Conservative leadership election to guarantee that one of
the two final contenders must be a woman."

I am not a fan of Boris but that is disgraceful!

It sounds like your country's in a bit of a transitional mess at the

I wonder what Maggie Thatcher's take on this contretemps would be, Ms. O ....

I was watching some news clips from the first 1975 referendum, and she was pro - EU, even wearing a colourful sweater (jumper?) emblazoned with the flags of the EU states...

At that very time in early June 1975 I was visiting the UK (I was on a student tour), and I vividly remember much of the hub - bub surrounding the referendum...

UK was a very different place back then, it was "the poor man of Europe"; a common lament was, "We won the war, but it's the Germans who are rich - shouldn't it be the other way around?" I remember a general air of shabbiness... in fact, coming from bright, shiny, and prosperous West Germany it was something of a jolt. Industry was in a parlous state, there were the strikes of that era, etc....

Now Britain is rich (at least in the SE!), it's Labour who wanted to stay in the EU, and the Conservatives out...interesting times!

Ahh but it wasn't the same EU we have now. We were voting to go into the
Common Market! Nothing to do with being the dictators they are now. They
did that very slowly ...

Incidentally, it wasn't on party lines, is was very mixed. Many Labour
areas voted to Leave. The Tories were split which is why we are having the
problems now. The PM and many of his cabinet wanted to Remain, and others
in his cabinet fought to leave.

That would be just swell. He's the kind of guy that responds well to adoration and acclaim. Carry on.

I can dig what you're saying. The new connected age has made for a world filled with disinterested third-parties. They have no horses in the race - they just believe that they do. We'll have petitions with many "signers" demanding that wrong-doers be punished for their stupidity/arrogance/race. Mostly, it's bullying without risk of any real identification/confrontation/repercussions. Welcome to the new world!
