I had a credit score of 835 just before my SSN was stolen in a breach
and my 2014 taxes filed by some creep. Right around that time it dropped
by 100 points and I saw nothing in my credit reports to explain that,
meaning no accounts opened, no late payments, nothing other than a
fraudulent tax return filed which took nearly a year to clear up. Score
is rising again since then but it can drop like a stone for seemingly no
reason, and take forever to get back to where it were it was. So much
for taking the suggestion to notify the credit agencies about identity
theft. I guess they "are just trying to protect me".

Not that I care, but one reason listed why my score wasn't higher
was that I didn't have a however many year credit history.

Oh, sorry I didn't have credit cards when I was 10.

The best reason to keep your score in the excellent range is
to get lower insurance premiums, or lower interest rates if
you do borrow money. Other than that, it's not that important
to your life.

These days you can get your actual FICO score from some
credit cards, it's not the same thing as a credit score,
and it's what lenders/etc really are checking.

The dividing line falls at 799. Anything above is "exemplary" credit.

That's also how you get those credit cards with 20+ months free
interest. We put our last cruise on one (not the first time we've
used that strategy) and will pay it off within the "free interest"
amount of time. We love the reverse (interest free) loan idea and use
it + the incentives they offer to our advantage.

Is FICO is the one with scores over 800 and real credit scores top out
at 800?

Do you live and die by your credit rating the way Americans do? We're
basically a credit card culture.

Nothing wrong with using their money if they're offering.

FICO goes from 350 - 850, the other score is called FAKO and
the range all depends on who's coming up with it.

And WHAT precisely does an "exemplary" credit rating get you? Besides specious bragging rights?

Thanks, haven't heard of FAKO, but from your description - it fits the
acronym (pronounced Fake-O).
